Save American Democracy, or What’s Left of It

September 21st, 2010

By Kevin Zeese

In the First Election After Citizens United, Voters Need to Beware and Organized to Combat Massive Power of Concentrated Corporations

This is the first election after the Citizens United decision which gave corporations complete freedom to spend as much money as they want to influence the outcome of elections.

Citizens beware. Citizens get active. Citizens get organized. Our fragile democracy is at grave risk.

We’ve seen in Obama’s time and office (and before) how corporations dominate Washington, DC. The health care “reform” turned out to be a re-enforcement of the insurance company dominated health care industry. And finance reform had to get the approval of Wall Street and the Federal Reserve before moving forward. Corporate welfare to the weapons industry, coal, nuclear and oil have continued or even grown under Obama. The housing crisis which should have ended with the bail out of Wall Street is getting worse with record foreclosures last month. But that is not enough for the oligarchs who control government through concentrated corporate power. They want more and are using massive spending on elections to get it.

Israel Denies Gazans Access to Their Own Land and Waters

September 20th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

Throughout 43 years of occupation, Israel has waged war on Palestinians' human rights and civil liberties, a new UN report providing more evidence that keeps mounting exponentially, adding clarity about an out-of-control rogue state operating lawlessly.

On August 10, Haaretz writer Akiva Eldar cited it in an article headlined, "UN report: IDF barring Gazans' access to farms, fishing zones," saying:

"Over the last 10 years, the (IDF has) increasingly restricted Palestinian access to farmland on the Gazan side of the Israeli-Gaza border as well as (offshore waters) along the Gaza beach, a United Nations report (just) revealed."

Constitutional Traitors

September 20th, 2010

Joel S. Hirschhorn

In recent days the idea of using the Article V convention option in the Constitution received support in an article by Texas US Senator John Cornyn published on the Fox News website. He noted “Recent polling suggests that a plurality of Americans support a convention to propose a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution if Congress will not do so.” He made a good case for using the convention option by saying it “would be part of a national conversation that could last well beyond one or two election cycles. The very length of the convention and ratification process would allow the American people ample opportunity to judge proposed reforms, and ensure that they would strengthen the checks and balances that have served our nation well.”

Obama's New Consumer Watchdog

September 20th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

On September 17, New York Times writers Jackie Calmes and Sewell Chan headlined, "Obama Picks Warren to Set Up Consumer Bureau," saying:

Obama appointed Harvard Law Professor Elizabeth Warren "to oversee" the new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (BCFP) "until a director is named later. The appointment (will let her) get the agency up and running without having to go through a contentious (Senate) confirmation battle," one she might lose because of Republican and industry opposition.

UANI: United Against the Nation of Iran

September 20th, 2010

Kourosh Ziabari

Those who regularly follow the developments of Iran might have come across to the website of "United Against Nuclear Iran", a "non-partisan, non-profit advocacy organization" that seeks to "prevent Iran from fulfilling its ambition to become a regional super-power possessing nuclear weapons"

UANI has compiled an elaborate list of the foreign companies and firms which do business with Iran and calls on its readers and visitors to send condemnatory letters and complaints to these companies so as to persuade them to withdraw their capitals and resources from Iran and stop doing business with a country which the United States and its European allies consider to be an emerging nuclear threat in the Middle East.

If I can't laugh and "If I can't dance, it's not my Revolution."

"If I can't dance, it's not my Revolution." -emma goldman

The night Jon Stewart announced a "Rally to Restore Sanity" and "The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert" joined in with a "March to Keep Fear Alive" this American 'girl' was dancing to every song ZZ Top and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed at the St. Pete Forum.

I grew up on the promise that the U.S. was always the good guy and that fear always closes ones mind and heart.

In the Colbert universe, "America, the Greatest Country God ever gave Man, was built on three bedrock principles: Freedom. Liberty. And Fear -- that someone might take our Freedom and Liberty. But now, there are dark, optimistic forces trying to take away our Fear…They want to replace our Fear with reason. But never forget – 'Reason' is just one letter away from 'Treason.'"

THE VICTIM GAME, ISRAEL’S WAR WITH ITSELF

September 19th, 2010

by Gordon Duff

JUDAIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN?

It is easy to spot a liar if you are willing to take an honest look. When the American press quoted President Ahmadinejad of Iran saying, “I am going to wipe Israel off the face of the earth” we had our own gullibility thrown in our faces. We, if willing to look honestly at ourselves, were being humiliated, played for fools. It is one thing if a spokesman for Bibi Netanyahu’s Likudist government had tried this, but it was all the networks and newspapers in America, all carrying the same story, a story, not only inaccurate but an outrageous lie. The story, the translation, was so false, that it should have been a joke were it not being used to try to convince America to attack Iran to “defend” Israel. This is what Ahmadinejad actually said:

“History will erase the Zionism from the sands of time”

Tea party talking points, translated

September 19th, 2010

Mary Shaw

The tea partiers have their talking points, which they repeat loudly and forcefully (and often misspell). But I wonder if they've actually really thought about the points they're parroting. I suspect not.

They rail against "Obamacare" and anything else that the White House (and Pelosi and Reid) might advocate, even though their protests fly in the face of their own best interests.

In repeating their talking points, here is what they're really saying to the Obama administration and Congress:

Imperialism and Imperial Barbarism

September 19th, 2010

James Petras

Imperialism, its character, means and ends has changed over time and place. Historically, western imperialism, has taken the form of tributary, mercantile, industrial, financial and in the contemporary period, a unique ‘militarist-barbaric’ form of empire building. Within each ‘period’, elements of past and future forms of imperial domination and exploitation ‘co-exist’ with the dominant mode. For example , in the ancient Greek and Roman empires, commercial and trade privileges complemented the extraction of tributary payments. Mercantile imperialism, was preceded and accompanied initially by the plunder of wealth and the extraction of tribute, sometimes referred to as “primitive accumulation”, where political and military power decimated the local population and forcibly removed and transferred wealth to the imperial capitals. As imperial commercial ascendancy was consolidated, manufacturing capital increasingly emerged as a co-participant; backed by imperial state policies manufacturing products destroyed local national manufacturers gaining control over local markets. Modern industrial driven imperialism, combined production and commerce, both complemented and supported by financial capital and its auxiliaries, insurance, transport and other sources of “invisible earnings”.

Monsanto, Blackwater and GM crop saboteurs

September 18th, 2010

By Rady Ananda
Food Freedom

Agribusiness giant Monsanto, which genetically modifies plants to exude or tolerate pesticide or to produce nonviable seed, hired the services of the mercenary firm Blackwater to spy on activists, Jeremy Scahill reports. A death-tech firm weds a hit squad.

This is no doubt in response to a decade of GM crop sabotage efforts around the globe. Since the publicly-announced introduction of GM crops in 1996, concerned citizens have vandalized such crops every single year somewhere on the planet. Several thousand GM plants have been partially or wholly destroyed. (See brief history below.)
