The Recession is Over, the Depression Just Beginning

January 11th, 2010

Stephen Lendman

In late 2009, former Merrill Lynch economist, now with the Canadian firm, Gluskin Sheff, said the following:

"The credit collapse and the accompanying deflation and overcapacity are going to drive the economy and financial markets in 2010. We have said this repeatedly that this recession is really a depression because the (post-WW II) recessions were merely small backward steps in an inventory cycle but in the context of expanding credit. Whereas now, we are in a prolonged period of credit contraction, especially as it relates to households and small businesses."

Congolese Women and Girls Suffering the Insufferable

January 11th, 2010

By Emily Spence and Brian McAfee

While in the eastern Congo last summer, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated, "With respect to companies that are responsible for what are now being called conflict minerals, I think the international community must start looking at steps we can take to try to prevent the mineral wealth from the DRC ending up in the hands of those who fund the violence here."

In relation, the Democratic Republic of Congo's UN supported armed assault against rebels in the eastern Congo has promoted widespread death, rape and other forms of brutality. Indeed, the decade long war has claimed at least 5.4 million lives -- the most in any conflict since WWII. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of women and girls, including babies, have suffered rapes and sexual mutilation, often with weapons and tools used in the process. Further, it is thought that, in eastern portions of the Congo, up to seventy percent of Congolese women, along with children of all ages, have been sexually attacked, according to the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, a research center at Harvard University.

Marriage vs. civil unions: Separate is never equal

January 10th, 2010

Mary Shaw

The New Jersey State Senate recently rejected a bill that would have legalized same-sex marriage in the Garden State.

Some people try to justify this state-sponsored discrimination by saying that same-sex marriage isn't necessary in New Jersey because that state offers civil unions for gay couples who want to enjoy similar benefits.

But they don't want to call it marriage. They want to maintain a heterosexual monopoly on the word "marriage". It's "separate but equal", they might say. But I contend that separate is never equal.

The Coming Fury of an Angry America

January 10th, 2010

Aetius Romulous

A tiny part of a tiny part of the population of the earth will set the terms for the future of all humans. A tiny part that is broken, spent out, and increasingly disillusioned. That sliver of humanity is the broken, spent out, and increasingly disillusioned American middle class, burdened with the task of spending all America out of catastrophe. When they break under the weight of desperate impossibility, how will the heartlands good citizens react, and what will they do?

According to the World Bank, there are 6,692,030,277 human beings on the earth. 308,108,741 of them live in the United States, about 4.6% of the total. Of these fortunate Americans, about 231,000,000 are of voting age. In general elections in history's greatest democracy, about half those eligible to vote actually do...115 million people. History's greatest democracy has only two options every election, a choice between two almost similar positions, and the winning option typically enjoys the support of only half of those who choose, approximately 60 million individuals.

Maryland’s Marty O’Gov Turns His Back on Fallen Mayor Dixon!

January 10th, 2010

by William Hughes

“Better an honest enemy than a false friend.” - Old German Proverb

On Jan. 6, 2010, Baltimore City’s Mayor Sheila Dixon, age 56, copped a controversial plea deal with the State Prosecutor on the criminal charges pending against her. As a result, she will vacate her office on Feb. 4, 2010. You could almost seeing it coming. After she was convicted by a jury on Dec. 1, 2009, of stealing $530 worth of gift cards, which were slated for the “poor and needy” of the city, the people began to turn against her. She also had a perjury trial awaiting her in March, 2010. (1) Dixon, never short on chutzpah, dared to show up in the Hampden neighborhood of the city for its annual “Mayor’s Christmas Parade.” Big mistake! She was roundly mocked as her car slowly passed along parts of the parade route. Hampden is the undisputed “Hon” capital of the Free World, where an annual “Honfest,” inspired by the films of the iconic John Waters, is held. Bottom line: Sheila Dixon is no longer a “Hon!”

Statement of September 11th Advocates In Response to 12/25 Terror Attempt :: January 8, 2010

It is with utter disbelief that we listen to the unfolding details of the attempted December 25, 2009 terrorist attack of Northwest Flight 253.

Let us remind you, on September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists managed to evade all security measures, hijack four commercial airliners, slam them into three buildings and a field in Pennsylvania, killing 2,976 innocent people, including our husbands. We responded by strenuously lobbying for an independent investigation to find out how on earth so many agencies could have failed in their duties to protect us, and our loved ones, from such an attack. We asked that they find and fix the loopholes that existed, in order to safeguard our nation.

Avatar: An Extension of White Supremacy

January 10th, 2010

Written by Frederick Alexander Meade

After having viewed the latest box office hit Avatar, themes which seemingly resonate timelessly, find their expression once again.

The story takes place on the distant planet of Pandora. This planet is bountiful in its natural resources and in particular “Unobtainium..” This precious mineral is highly coveted universally, as a business interest from the distant planet Earth seeks to exploit the planet in gathering this resource for its own entrepreneurial purposes. Such an endeavor would be easily undertaken if not for the indigenous population of the planet, the Na’vi.

Children Suffer The Most As A Result Of The Siege On Gaza

January 10th, 2010

Text and Photos by Ayman Quader, Gaza

This is the story of Mahdi abu Zer, 14 years old, living in a very marginalized area called the Qarah district, Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip. His father was killed leaving the family in dire need of support. The re-marriage of his mother has made Mahdi's life even worse rather than better. Mahdi and his other two siblings were forced to leave her and live under the guardianship of their jobless grandfather along with their aunt. Mahdi's home was completely destroyed two years ago as a result of the ongoing incursions in their area . Since that time, the entire family consisting of 3 members has been living miserably in a tent of 17 square meters. To make things worse, reconstruction material has been denied access in Gaza due to the ongoing Israeli blockade on Gaza since June 2007, preventing building and raw materials from entering. Life here is really tough and unbearable for this tiny family. " I can never forget the days of the recent war. It was the time my home was completely bulldozed and bombed two years ago". "During the war we moved to be sheltered by our relatives who are not far from us".

Impressions of Israeli Executions in the West Bank

January 9th, 2010

Vijay Raghavan

FIGURE 5

Introduction: Recently, my family and I were in Israel-Palestine. We spent Christmas in Palestine and then drove north to Nablus. There we witnessed the aftermath of the Israeli targeted killing of three Palestinians. We met the affected families and I wrote down my impressions of the Israeli operation in the form of a report (supplemented with photographs). Later I found out that the American government is questioning the Israeli government on the operation, and therefore I have made the report available to Congress and the State Department. However, I really think that the impressions of an ordinary American citizen should be seen by other Americans.

Much planning had gone into our family vacation in Israel-Palestine. We could spare only the last two weeks of 2009, and so had developed an uncompromising itinerary for each day, allowing a mere half-day to recover from jet lag from our trip from California. After devoting most of the first week to visiting holy places in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron and Jericho, we were, in the words of our 17-year-old, quite “churched out.” We are a typical American family in at least one regard: we have two other children (ages five and two), and we are all blessed with limited attention span. Absorbing detailed references to the Old and New Testaments in the places we visited was beyond our capabilities. Our hired tour guide and driver, Issa Habash , had long ago taken notice of our monumental ignorance and had given up on reciting chapter and verse from the Bible.
