Fidel Castro's Remarks on the 70th Anniversary of Russia's Great Patriotic War

May 14th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Fidel is a living legend - bigger than life, remarkable by any standard, a hero to Cubans and millions worldwide.

He recovered from serious illness that nearly took him. His inner strength and redoubtable spirit saved him. He's an inspiration to us all.

In August, he'll reach age 89. His intellect and spirit remain strong. The flesh isn't what it used to be - nor for most anyone after 80 years.

He still writes occasional articles and reflections - always with important thoughts to convey - this time on "Our right to be Maxist-Leninists."

His article was published the day before Russia's stunning V-Day commemoration - a glorious tribute to millions of heroes who saved their Motherland, Europe and beyond from the scourge of fascism.

The Early Signs of Whom The Next U.S. President Will Likely Be Presidential Polls Look Confusing Regarding Bernie, But Downright Bad Regarding Hillary & All Republicans

May 14th, 2015

Eric Zuesse

The top thing that I look for in polling-results this early in a Presidential race, is the ratio of “Favorable” or “Positive,” to “Unfavorable” or “Negative” ratings, regarding each candidate. These ratings tap into the public’s sentiments concerning each individual candidate, instead of into mere name-recognition; and they’re also not comparing the candidates with each other, which most voters at so early a stage in the Presidential contest can’t yet do in any reliable way. When respondents are being permitted to indicate not just their pro-or-con direction but also the strength of their feelings regarding the given candidates, then the most meaningful ratio is produced.

One such poll was just issued: On May 11th, the GWU “GWBattleground” poll was published, and it offered its 1,000 respondents both the favorable-unfavorable, and also the degree-or-intensity, parameters; and, so, it can provide an unusually reliable indication, at such an early date, concerning whom the serious contenders will likely turn out to be when this contest matures.

Subject: US Defense Department's Fabricated Chinese Threat

May 13th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

The whole world knows China threatens no other nation. Its foreign policy is polar opposite America's.

Like Russia, it deplores war. It promotes peace, stability and mutual cooperation among all nations.

It prioritizes economic growth and development. Its accomplishments over the past three and a half decades reflect one of the great success stories in modern times - enough to roil officials in Washington.

It's becoming the world's preeminent economic power by any measure. It's a powerhouse independent nation. Allied with Russia, it's a major deterrent to US global hegemony.

Kiev's Ongoing Aggression on Donbass

May 13th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Minsk II ceasefire terms didn't end conflict. Kiev breached them straightaway - the way it did after two previous 2014 agreements. Nothing its fascist regime agrees to is worth the paper it’s written on.

Low-level conflict continues. A previous article quoted US-controlled puppet Ukrainian president Poroshenko on state-controlled television saying:

"The war will be over only when Ukraine regains control of Donbass and Crimea."

Iran's Humanitarian "Rescue" Ship to Yemen

May 13th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Washington wants mass Yemeni casualties. It prioritizes overwhelming human suffering as a strategy to defeat resistance to its proxy war of aggression.

Iran is the region's most prominent peacemaker. It vows not to let Yemen become another Gaza. It intends trying to deliver vital humanitarian aid despite US/Saudi efforts to block it.

On Saturday, a cargo ship named "Rescue" set sail for Yemen. It carries 2,500 tons of medical supplies, food, water, tents and other needed aid.

On board are human rights workers, doctors, other medical professionals, anti-war activists and Iranian journalists.

Obama DID NOT Kill Bin Laden!

May 13th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Claiming otherwise is one of his many Big Lies. On May 1, 2011, he willfully deceived the US public saying:

"The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat Al Qaeda." "Today's achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people."

In last Sunday's London Review of Books, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh shredded Obama's Big Lie like others before him.

Obama's official narrative "might have been written by (Alice in Wonderland author) Lewis Carroll," he said. It was a total fabrication. More on his account below.

The Anti-Arab Zionized Ruling Al Saud

May 13th, 2015

Elias Akleh

The Middle Eastern region has a central geopolitical and economic importance. A united Arab world could become the major global power. Before leaving the region after WWII, Britain made sure to create two complimentary, although seemingly contradictory, terrorist entities in the region; Zionist Israel in Palestine and Wahhabi Saudi Arabia in the Arabian Peninsula. The main job of these two entities is to spread terror and cause wars in the region to keep it divided and weak. Unknowingly to the Saudi family their kingdom is also planned for division.

It must be clearly and loudly declared that the Saudi ruling family follows an anti-Arab, anti-Muslim, pro-Zionist, terror-sponsored, tyrannical, suppressive, ruthless, authoritarian, and treacherous absolute monarchy. The Saudi monarchy was established on betrayal, chauvinism, elitism, and discrimination.

Venezuela's Maduro in Moscow: Lunatics in Washington Want Him Ousted

May 12th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Venezuela and America are polar opposites. Bolivarian social justice, participatory democracy and mutual cooperation with all nations contrasts with the myth of "we the people," neoliberal harshness and endless wars on humanity.

Differences between both countries are stark. In America, a permanent state of war exists against invented enemies.

Fundamental freedoms are disappearing in plain sight. A police state apparatus controls things.

A culture of violence persists. US streets in minority communities are virtual battlegrounds.

Social decay is deepening. Secrecy and fear-mongering prevail. Political imprisonments are commonplace. America runs the world's largest gulag - operating at home and abroad.

Fast Track the Good Stuff

May 12th, 2015

By David Swanson

The U.S. Senate has been very concerned not to let peace with Iran slip into place too easily, even while a new war in Iraq and Syria proceeds without the formal pretense of Congress "authorizing" or rejecting it.

Both houses of Congress are interested in ramming through the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) on a fast track. The fast track procedure of rushing things through Congress or creating them without Congress seems to be reserved for the least popular ideas our government produces. What if, instead, a fast track were set up for those items favored by a vast majority of the public, or required for the future habitability of the planet, but which meet resistance from campaign funders, lobbyists, and the corporate media?

Phony US/Saudi Proposed 5-Day Truce in Yemen

May 12th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

A proposed 5-day humanitarian pause belies weeks of relentless terror-bombing harming civilians most - deliberately mass murdering them in cold blood.

Pausing in genocidal slaughter is subterfuge. It ignores US-orchestrated/Saudi-led naked aggression against a nation threatening no others.

It does nothing to address their illegal blockade - willfully preventing essential to life humanitarian aid from reaching Yemenis in need.

At the same time, Houthis are wrongfully blamed for defending themselves against pro-Saudi forces, imported takfiri death squads and by retaliating cross-border. On Saturday, UN humanitarian coordinator for Yemen Johannes van der Klaauw blasted Riyadh for "indiscriminate(ly) bombing…populated areas, with or without prior warning…"
