Supreme Court Guts Voting Rights Act

June 27th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

America's High Court lacks legitimacy. It's supremely pro-business, anti-populist, anti-labor, and anti-rule of law fairness. It mocks democratic principles. It does so shamelessly.

On June 25, it eviscerated Voting Rights Act enforcement. It usurped congressional authority. It did so unconscionably. In Shelby County v. Holder, it ruled 5 - 4. More on this below.

A previous article said America's Supremes are notoriously hard right. Equal justice under law is more illusion than reality. Rule of law principles and egalitarian fairness don't matter. Power politics corrupts the High Court. It lacks legitimacy.

Five justices are Federalist Society (FS) members. They include Chief Justice John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy, and Clarence Thomas. They're ideological extremists.

Edward Snowden on the Move, History in the Making

June 27th, 2013

by Nozomi Hayase

After the largest leak in NSA history, the unprecedented scale of the PRISM global spying program sparked a global controversy. Whistle-blower Edward Snowden, responsible for the release has been at the eye of the storm of international attention as he left Hong Kong to find sanctuary.

The tired drumbeat of government rhetoric grew louder, with officials calling Snowden a 'traitor' and 'villain', while Hong Kong citizens and others around the world rallied in support of him. Apparently the idea that anyone virtually anywhere in the world has a huge unaccountable government constantly spying on them didn't sit well with a lot of people.

On Friday, the US revealed it had charged Snowden with three felonies, including two under the Espionage Act, the 1917 statute enacted to criminalize dissent against World War I. Despite Obama's campaign promise of transparency and protection for whistleblowers, Snowden is the seventh person to be indicted under Espionage Act by Obama's highly secretive administration.

Snowden on the Move

June 26th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Where is Edward Snowden? Unanswered questions remain. Supposedly he traveled from Hong Kong to Moscow en route to Havana and Quito, Ecuador. Or did he? More on that below.

On June 25, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) headlined "Snowden sought Booz Allen job to gather evidence on NSA surveillance."

He said so. "My position with Booz Allen Hamilton granted me access to lists of machines all over the world the NSA hacked," he explained.

"That is why I accepted that position about three months ago." He took less pay "in the course of pursuing specific work. Booz was not the most I've been paid."

Lyndon LaRouche Declares: Only Preemptive Bankruptcy Action Against British Can Save The United States

June 26th, 2013

Lyndon LaRouche (LPAC)

As the result of a careful review of two recent documents publicly released by JP Morgan Chase and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the following urgent call to action has been issued by Lyndon LaRouche through the LaRouche Political Action Committee (LPAC):

Over the last three weeks, you’ve had several explicit statements of intent, from a major faction of the British-European oligarchy. The first was the J.P. Morgan research paper published May 28th which laid out a perspective for the Eurozone.[1] In this 16-page document, they said: We’re halfway there to the establishment of a bankers’ dictatorship over a single-currency European region which no longer has any degree of national sovereignty; and to complete the process, we’ve got to crush any resistance to establishing a dictatorship over all of Europe, an austerity fascist dictatorship, effectively on the model of what was done, at the initiative of the Bank of England and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in the 1930s with the bankrolling of Hitler and the Nazis by the likes of Montagu Norman, Prescott Bush and Averell Harriman. In this document the authors from the JP Morgan London office are very explicit, very transparent that the big problem areas within the Eurozone, are Italy and Germany, in part because of certain residual anti-fascist features of the immediate postwar Constitution in Germany, and impulses in that direction in Italy; but that, basically, this has to be crushed.

State Department Debunks Iranian Latin American Terrorism Links

June 26th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

False anti-Iranian accusations persist. They're longstanding. Claims about alleged nuclear bomb development don't wash. Nor do well publicized terror attack charges.

The Islamic Republic's maliciously vilified. False accusations follow earlier ones. A disturbing pattern repeats. Iran's sovereignty is challenged. Its independence is threatened.

Washington wants pro-Western stooges everywhere. It wants rival states eliminated. It wants unchallenged global dominance. Everything's fair game to achieve it. Duplicitous misinformation proliferates.

Argentinian officials falsely charged former Hezbollah leader Imad Mughniyah in connection with the 1992 Israeli Buenos Aires embassy bombing. It killed 29 civilians and wounded 242 others.

Richard Falk: Speaking Truth to Power

June 26th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Falk is Princeton University Professor Emeritus. For 40 years, he taught international law and relations. In 2008, he was appointed UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian human rights.

He's outspoken about longstanding Israeli human rights abuses. They're too horrendous to ignore. On June 6, he addressed them. More on that below.

May 15 is Nakba Day. It's the "day of the catastrophe." In 1948, Israel stole 78% of historic Palestine.

In 1967, it took the rest. June 5 is Naksa Day. It commemorates the "day of the setback." It's when Israel occupied Palestinian-populated West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.

It remains illegally occupied. It's militarized for control. It's dominated ruthlessly and repressively. For 46 years, Palestinians been criminally oppressed. Millions have been terrorized. Hundreds of thousands have been killed, injured, and/or displaced.

Marriage and death on Wednesday's agenda

June 25th, 2013

Mary Shaw

Wednesday, June 26, promises to be a big news day, for good or for bad.

First, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to weigh in on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California's Proposition 8, both of which deal with same-sex marriage.

DOMA defines marriage for all federal purposes as a legal union between a man and a woman. The case, United States v. Windsor, was brought on behalf of Edith "Edie" Windsor, who in 2009 lost her spouse of 44 years, Thea Spyer. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Windsor and Spyer had gotten married in Canada in 2007, and "were considered married by their home state of New York." But, because of DOMA, explains the ACLU, "Windsor was not able to claim the estate tax marital deduction that is available when the surviving spouse is of the opposite sex. In her lawsuit, Windsor is seeking to have DOMA declared unconstitutional and to obtain a refund of the federal estate tax that she was forced to pay following Spyer's death."

America: Police State Ruthlessness Writ Large

June 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Snowden in Russia

Cold-blooded barbarity reflects US policy. Democracy's more illusion than reality. Rule of law principles don't matter. They're systematically spurned.

Dissent's increasingly targeted. Freedom's imperiled. Obama's ruthless. He exceeds the worst of George Bush. He's waging war on truth-tellers. He targeted more whistleblowers than all his predecessors combined.

Merrian-Webster calls a police state "a political unit characterized by repressive governmental control of political, economic, and social life usually by an arbitrary exercise of power by police and especially secret police in place of regular operation of administrative and judicial organs of the government according to publicly known legal procedures."

The Oxford dictionary calls it "a totalitarian state controlled by a political police force that secretly supervises the citizens' activities."

Brazilians Demand Social Justice

June 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Justifiable public anger holds back only so long. On June 11, protests began. On June 17, they erupted across Brazil. Hundreds of thousands turned out. Estimates ranged up to 1.5 million.

At issue is scandalous misspending on sports. It's at a time of stalling economic growth, layoffs, rising inflation, and few opportunities for youths.

Public need are sacrificed. Billions go for construction. It's spent for the 2014 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics.

On June 21, FIFA secretary general Jerome Falcke said:

"The Confederations Cup is taking place in Brazil and the World Cup must be held in Brazil. There is no plan B."

Trafficking in Lies about Syria

June 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Media scoundrels substitute lies for truth and full disclosure. They violate core journalistic ethics doing so. They threaten world peace.

They're waging war on freedom. They do it shameless, recklessly and unapologetically. They continue ad nauseam.

Victims are called war criminals. Aggressive wars are called liberating ones. Western state terrorism is called humanitarian intervention.

Media scoundrels front for power. They support imperial lawlessness. Syria's being ravaged and destroyed. Assad's vilified for defending his nation responsibly.
