President Joe Biden’s announcement Wednesday to send 31 high-tech M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine received all the appropriate attention in the media Thursday. But it was just a fraction of the millions of weapons, ammunition, missiles, and even boats the United States has dedicated to Ukraine’s fight with Russia, according to a new list of systems shipped to the war-torn nation. The package so far totals about $27 billion, according to State and congressional officials. It appears enough to arm a small army. Overall, taxpayers are sending 80,291 weapon systems, vehicles, boats, and radars to Ukraine, including the 31 Abrams tanks. But it is likely far more since neither the State Department nor a Congressional Research Service tally of systems sent to Ukraine fully accounts for all headed overseas. For example, photos have been taken of U.S.-supplied M777 Howitzers being used in Ukraine, but they are not on the latest list of U.S. transfers.
