CIA director Bill Burns arrived in Tel Aviv on Thursday for visits to Israel and the occupied West Bank, where he is expected to meet Israeli and Palestinian leaders and his counterparts on both sides, according to two U.S. sources with knowledge of "the issue." | State of play: Tensions in the region intensified on Thursday after the Israeli military killed nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman, during a raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Several Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters were killed when a gunfight broke out during the raid. At least 20 Palestinians were wounded, including unarmed civilians. The Israeli military said that prior to the raid it had received intelligence about a group of Islamic Jihad operatives it suspected of carrying out armed attacks against Israeli soldiers. The group was planning more attacks, the Israeli military claimed.
■ Death toll rises to 10 following Israeli army ‘massacre’ in Jenin (Mondoweiss) | Israeli forces launched a brutal assault on Jenin refugee camp that killed 9 Palestinians and a tenth later in the day during clashes in al-Ram, making it the deadliest day of 2023, and one of the single deadliest raids in the West Bank in years.
■ US, Israel Conclude Largest-Ever Joint Military Exercise Aimed at Iran (Antiwar.com) | The US and Israel on Thursday announced the conclusion of their largest-ever joint military exercises, known as Juniper Oak 23. The drills were launched Monday and involved over 140 aircraft and nearly 8,000 troops from both militaries. The massive show of force was clearly a provocation toward Iran despite claims from US officials that it wasn’t aimed at any one country. ● Besides sending a message to Iran, the massive exercise demonstrates that the US has Israel’s back in the region despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which has pledged to expand settlements in the West Bank and eventually annex the territory.

The federal government, working hand-in-hand with universities, private companies and Big Tech, is funneling millions of dollars in taxpayer money to fund an AI censorship program to be used on American citizens | The government's campaign to fight "misinformation" has expanded to adapt military-grade artificial intelligence once used to silence the Islamic State (ISIS) to quickly identify and censor American dissent on issues like vaccine safety and election integrity, according to grant documents and cyber experts. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded several million dollars in grants recently to universities and private firms to develop tools eerily similar to those developed in 2011 by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in its Social Media in Strategic Communication (SMISC) program. DARPA said those tools were used "to help identify misinformation or deception campaigns and counter them with truthful information," beginning with the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East that spawned ISIS [I-CIA-SIS] over a decade ago. DARPA set four specific goals for the program.

Behold this 2003 Sydney Morning Herald article. It’s a relic from another age:
Farce mask: it’s safe for only 20 minutes
Retailers who cash in on community fears about SARS by exaggerating the health benefits of surgical masks could face fines of up to $110,000.
NSW Fair Trading Minister Reba Meagher yesterday warned that distributors and traders could be prosecuted if it was suggested the masks offered unrealistic levels of protection from the disease. …
Health authorities have warned that surgical masks may not be an effective protection against the virus.
“Those masks are only effective so long as they are dry,” said Professor Yvonne Cossart of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of Sydney.
“As soon as they become saturated with the moisture in your breath they stop doing their job and pass on the droplets.”
Professor Cossart said that could take as little as 15 or 20 minutes, after which the mask would need to be changed. But those warnings haven’t stopped people snapping up the masks, with retailers reporting they are having trouble keeping up with demand.
John Bell from the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, who owns a pharmacy in Woollahra, Sydney, said mask supplies were running low. …
“I think they’re of marginal benefit,” he said. “In a way they give some comfort to people who think they're doing as much as they can do to prevent the infection.” …
It's only violence when it's conservative boomers being guided into the Capitol by federal police... | An Antifa-aligned “journalist” performed a mental gymnastics routine live on CNN this week, as he attempted to re-define the word violence to excuse the destruction brought on by Antifa radicals in the city of Atlanta, as they riot against the construction of a new police training facility. David Peisner, a “freelance journalist” who’s done work for CNN, The New York Times, and Rolling Stone among others, bizarrely claimed during a CNN interview on Atlanta’s Antifa riots that the left-wing militants who’ve hurled Molotov cocktails at police and attacked construction workers for their role in building Atlanta’s new police training center aren’t actually violent at all, even as scenes of fiery destruction played on CNN’s screen adjacent to him.
Marlene Pray, the founder of a Planned Parenthood-backed LGBT youth sex education group in Bucks County, PA, discussed “white terror” and stated that there is “no such thing” as a “good” white person during a Zoom meeting. Pray is the founder of the Rainbow Room, an “LGBTQIA youth program that provides a supportive and empowering environment for youth ages 14-21.” | During a zoom meeting on the topic of “systemic racism,” Pray, a white woman, was asked if she herself was a racist. “Yes, absolutely. I am a racist. I participate and function and benefit from a system of racism,” the Rainbow Room founder replied enthusiastically. “Whether we call it white supremacy, although we are in no way supreme, so white terrorism is sometimes a more appropriate term for this system that we live in.”
First came the main battle tanks, now for air superiority. Kyiv will push its Western allies for fourth generation fighter jets such as the U.S.-made F-16 after securing supplies of heavy armor, an adviser to Ukraine’s defence minister outlined Wednesday. 💬 “The next big hurdle will now be the fighter jets,” Yuriy Sak, who advises Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, told Reuters. ● The outlet notes Ukraine’s Air Force has a fleet of ageing Soviet-era fighter jets that first flew before Kyiv even declared independence some 31 years ago. The warplanes are used for intercept missions and ground attack roles against entrenched Russian forces.

Seattle officials deliberately 'purged' thousands of CHOP-related text messages, despite 'legal obligation' to retain them - federal judge | Several former and current Seattle, Washington, officials who were in office during the 2020 Capitol Hill Organized Protest or Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone -- better known as CHOP or CHAZ -- deliberately "purged" evidentiary text messages related to that event, a federal judge has determined. As a result, the jury that will eventually consider a lawsuit about that event may presume that the missing text messages were "unfavorable" to the city and to those officials...But physical violence was not the only harm CHOP caused. Businesses located within the occupied territory suffered serious injury to their bottom line, to say nothing of the integrity of their buildings, because protesters refused to allow employees and clients to access them. More than a dozen of those businesses quickly filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming that officials had supported CHOP by providing various accommodations to the protesters...Now, a federal judge has determined that that lawsuit can go to trial.

Nearly 3,000 more Britons are dying than average on a weekly basis, and it’s not Covid-19 that’s responsible | Troubled by national statistics showing 20% excess deaths per week, UK MPs have demanded an investigation, the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday. Unlike the last time excess deaths reached such levels, during the second Covid-19 wave, few of these deaths could be attributed to the virus. ● Speaking before the House of Commons on Tuesday, Conservative MP Esther McVey skewered Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty for blaming the spike in non-Covid excess deaths on “patients not getting statins or blood pressure medicines during the pandemic,” pointing out that the monthly figures for statin prescriptions had remained constant.
Conservative MP Esther McVey: “Where is the evidence? And if there isn’t one, what is causing these excess deaths?” she asked, demanding the minister “commit to an urgent and thorough investigation of the matter.” “Where is the evidence? And if there isn’t one, what is causing these excess deaths?” she asked, demanding the minister “commit to an urgent and thorough investigation of the matter.” Labour shadow public health minister Andrew Gwynne described health secretary Steve Barclay as “part man, part ostrich” over his refusal to confront the issue, accusing PM Rishi Sunak’s government of “denial and buck-passing.” “There were 50,000 more deaths than we would have otherwise expected in 2022,” he told the House of Commons on Tuesday. “Excluding the pandemic, that’s the worst figure since 1951.”

Health officials announced Monday they want to make coronavirus booster vaccinations an annual event in America, renewing a call first made by President Joe Biden. | AP reports the push comes as latest statistics show more than 80 percent of the U.S. population has had at least one vaccine dose, while barely 16 percent of those eligible have received the latest boosters authorized in August. Biden first urged Americans last year to get coronavirus vaccine boosters, recommending one additional annual booster shot, as Breitbart News reported. ● Dr. Anthony Fauci has already flagged the possibility of coronavirus booster shots, explaining people “very well may need to get booster shots to keep up the level of protection” to exacerbate the mortality rate.

A prominent cartoonist and political influencer has changed his narrative on COVID-19 vaccinations. | Scott Adams, the creator of the “Dilbert” comic strip, said in a youtube video Saturday that COVID vaccine skeptics “appear to be right.” Adams recognized the non-vaccinated’s natural immunity as a viable protection against COVID-19. “Somebody who did not get vaccinated, got a little ‘omicron’ or maybe even a worse [strain] but recovered, now you’ve got natural immunity, can we all agree that that was the winning path,” Adams encouraged. 💬 “I want you to hear that clearly: the anti-vax people appear to be the winners. The anti-vaxxers clearly are the winners at this point, and I think it’ll probably stay that way. And I don’t want to put any shade on that whatsoever. They came out the best. They have the winning position. The unvaccinated have a current advantage, because they feel better.”
One Twitter user, Andy Swan, criticized Adams for referring to COVID-19 vaccine skeptics of being “antivaxxers.” 💬 “The fact that @ScottAdamsSay still refers to us as “antivaxxers” — despite knowing that the vast majority of us support actual vaccines and had no hesitation in giving our children actual vaccines — indicates that he is still caught in the propaganda vortex. Sad.”

Four migrants bused into New York City from Texas were busted for snatching thousands of dollars in merchandise from a Nassau County mall, officials said Monday. | Wrallan Cabezas Meza, 19, Miguel Angel Rojas, 21, Rafael Rojas, 27, and Jose Garcia Escobar, 30, are accused of driving from the Big Apple to Garden City and stealing $12,489 in goods from Macy’s Roosevelt Field earlier this month, according to county police. ● Cops caught the crew shortly after the Jan. 9 heist in Hampstead when Meza was pulled over for allegedly failing to use a turn signal in a 2006 BMW with bogus plates, a criminal complaint in the case states. The suspects later told a Spanish-speaking Nassau County detective that they came to New York City on a bus from the Lone Star State, Detective Lt. Richard Lebrun said.

President Joe Biden’s administration has accused the Big Tech giant of abusing its dominance of the online advertising business | Google has used “anti-competitive, exclusionary” practices to illegally crush or diminish any major threats to its dominance over the online advertising industry, President Joe Biden’s administration has alleged in a lawsuit against the company. ● The US Department of Justice (DOJ) filed its antitrust lawsuit against Google on Tuesday in US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, calling for the company to be forced to sell off parts of its advertising business. Advertising accounts for about 80% of the Big Tech behemoth’s revenue. ● Eight states, including Google’s home state of California, joined the federal government in Tuesday’s lawsuit. “We are taking action by filing this lawsuit to unwind Google’s monopoly and restore competition to the digital advertising business,” Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said.

A lawyer for Mike Pence has reported the discovery of secret papers in the former vice president’s Indiana home | A lawyer representing Pence, Greg Jacob, last week reported to the National Archives and Records Administration that a “small number” of papers with classified markings were discovered at the ex-VP’s home in Indiana. Jacob wrote in a letter to the agency that the find was made during a search by a legal firm that Pence hired in the wake of this month’s scandal over Biden’s handling of state secrets. CNN, which obtained a copy of the letter, first reported the news on Tuesday.

An unsecured server discovered by a security researcher last week contained the identities of hundreds of thousands of individuals from the U.S. government’s Terrorist Screening Database and “No Fly List.” | Located by the Swiss hacker known as maia arson crimew, the server, run by the U.S. national airline CommuteAir, was left exposed on the public internet. It revealed a vast amount of company data, including private information on almost 1,000 CommuteAir employees. Analysis of the server resulted in the discovery of a text file named “NoFly.csv,” a reference to the subset of individuals in the Terrorist Screening Database who have been barred from air travel due to having suspected or known ties to terrorist organizations. The list, according to crimew, appeared to have more than 1.5 million entries in total. The data included names as well as birth dates. It also included multiple aliases, placing the number of unique individuals at far less than 1.5 million.

As Barack Obama returned to the White House now occupied by his former vice president, even the mainstream media couldn’t ignore the tension between the two men. Once touted as an enviable bromance, it is now clear the two men’s relationship is one of raw power and political one-upmanship. | Now that Biden sits in the Oval Office, Obama seems almost ashamed that the gaffe prone octogenarian has a political connection to him. He could hardly hide his disdain for his former VP during his September visit to the White House to unveil his and Michelle’s official portraits or during an April visit on the anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. “Obama Reminds Biden Who’s Boss,” a New York magazine headline read. ● Obama is far more adored in his own party than the current president. When visiting the White House in April, Obama received a hero’s welcome from high-ranking Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi and other White House staffers. Obama even jokingly referred to Biden as his “vice president” at the start of his speech. The comment, which Obama assured Biden was a joke, irked some of Biden’s aides, who heard it as yet another example of Obama’s sense of superiority over the president, Politico reported.

Jourová, the European Commission's Vice President for Values and Transparency, told Euronews Next that Twitter may face penalties for enabling free speech in violation of European Union regulations. "The time of the Wild West is over," she said. "We will have the Digital Services Act [DSA]. We will have the Code of Practice as a part of this legislation," Jourová said. "So, after Mr. Musk took over Twitter with his 'freedom of speech absolutism' - we are the protectors of freedom of speech as well. But at the same time, we cannot accept, for instance, illegal content online and so on. So, our message was clear: we have rules which have to be complied with, otherwise there will be sanctions." [Jourová: No. And if you're on your fourth booster, it's likely that its your era that will soon be over.] Jourová also recounted that in previous years, European politicians and big tech companies had "gentlemen’s agreements" and other ways of negotiating aside from legislation.

Several Democrat-led states introduced similar measures in effort to tax rich even more | California lawmakers are pushing legislation that would impose a new tax on the state's wealthiest residents — even if they've already moved to another part of the country. Assemblyman Alex Lee, a progressive Democrat, last week introduced a bill in the California State Legislature that would impose an extra annual 1.5% tax on those with a "worldwide net worth" above $1 billion, starting as early as January 2024. Worldwide wealth extends beyond annual income to include diverse holdings such as farm assets, arts and other collectibles, and stocks and hedge fund interest.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson called Antifa “the armed instrument” of the “permanent Democratic establishment” Monday, citing the weekend riots in Atlanta where police made multiple arrests. | 💬 “What happened to Antifa? Ever wonder that? The shadowy, heavily-armed left-wing militia group, the guys dressed like stormtroopers in black masks. You remember them, of course, well from the summer of 2020. They burned our cities that year, churches and police stations and courthouses,” Carlson, an honorary member of the Daily Caller News Foundation’s board, said. “Now the point of the violence, the extensive violence and the killings they committed was to defeat Donald Trump and make the country so chaotic that voters would want to change, and they were effective. They were so effective that Kamala Harris herself raised money to bail them out of jail.”
