President Emmanuel Macron has proposed reducing the size of the French parliament by one third, among a set of "profound changes," as he set out his agenda for his term to the Senate and National Assembly in Versailles. If the reform is approved, the National Assembly would be cut from 577 members to 385 and the Senate would be reduced from 348 members to 232, Liberation newspaper calculated. Macron wants to abolish of the Court of Justice of the Republic, a special French court that deals only with ministerial misconduct.

A potentially deadly brain-eating amoeba has been discovered by health officials in the water system of a Louisiana parish.The amoeba occurs naturally in freshwater and causes a disease called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), which can destroy brain tissue. Early symptoms of PAM can resemble bacterial meningitis.

Carried out at 33 sites in the United Kingdom, Germany and Hungary, the study found that exposure to neonicotinoids “left honeybee hives less likely to survive over winter, while bumblebees and solitary bees produced fewer queens.” Bayer and Syngenta, makers of “neonic” pesticides who stand to reap massive profits if Europe lifts the neonic ban, promptly disputed the researchers’ conclusions—even though they partially funded the study.
