American colleges and universities have followed suit, becoming part of a major movement nationwide to create “sanctuary campuses.” Oakland, California, appears to be the first city to champion “sanctuary workplaces” through a city council resolution adopted earlier this week. The measure, championed by immigration rights groups, would prevent employers from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to identify employees who are in the country illegally.

The death toll in three weeks of violence at anti-government protests in Venezuela jumped to 20 people after a night of clashes and pillaging left 12 people dead in Caracas, reports AFP. Riot police and pro-government vigilantes fought running battles on the capital's east, west and south sides with protesters demanding the ouster of President Nicolas Maduro.

Two Japanese Navy destroyers have joined the carrier strike group ‘USS Carl Vinson’ heading towards the Korean Peninsula for a massive show of force as North Korea prepares to mark the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its military. The Japanese warships, destroyers ‘Ashigara’ and ‘Samidare’, left the navy’s Sasebo base early on Friday for a rendezvous with the ‘USS Carl Vinson’ group off North Korean shores, NHK reports.

French police have used tear gas to disperse angry demonstrators protesting against far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen in the southern city of Marseilles. Some 500 protesters, shouting anti-Le Pen slogans, attempted to counter a rally by nearly 5,000 Le Pen supporters in Marseilles on Wednesday. Le Pen proposes France’s exit from the European Union, voices concerns about security and immigration. She has vowed to place an immediate moratorium on all kinds of immigration as soon as she takes office as president, if she does. French presidential election scheduled for April 23.

US automaker General Motors (GM)accused Venezuelan authorities of seizing its plant in the industrial hub of Valencia and pledged to "take all legal action."" In addition, other assets of the company, such as vehicles, have been illegally taken from its facilities," the company said in a statement, quoted by Reuters. Three people have died as a result of the so-called “mother of all marches” taking place in Venezuela. Demonstrators are calling for the resignation of President Nicolas Maduro amid the country’s ongoing economic crisis.
