On Thursday, Ahmad Zaidan, the former Al Jazeera Islamabad Bureau Chief, and Bilal Kareem, a freelance journalist, filed a lawsuit in the US District Court in Washington alleging they were erroneously placed on a kill list under former President Barack Obama’s administration, which they say, President Donald Trump has illegally continued.
Zaidan was the first journalist to interview Osama Bin Laden in 1998 and Kareem is a US citizen who “narrowly avoided being killed by five separate air strikes,” according to the lawsuit filed by UK-based human rights group Reprieve.
The Russian central bank opened its first overseas office in Beijing on March 14, marking a step forward in forging a Beijing-Moscow alliance to bypass the US dollar in the global monetary system, and to phase-in a gold-backed standard of trade.

Fast food giant Subway has removed ham and bacon from menus in 185 stores and switched to halal meat in the UK after “strong demands” by Muslims. Halal foods are foods that Muslims are allowed to eat or drink under Islamic law. Pork isn’t permitted and the slaughtering of animals must be performed by a Muslim, who first invokes the name of Allah, cuts the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels (while the animal is conscious), and drains all the blood from the veins. Fear of Muslims has multiplied greatly after the London bombings in July 2005. Muslims make up 4.8% of the population.

Farmers in a region of Italy have a unique use for cannabis, and it has nothing to do with getting high. It seems that the low-THC hemp helps decontaminate polluted soil; contaminants are absorbed by the fast-growing roots of the cannabis plant, which store and sometimes transform the toxins into a harmless substance. It’s reported that phytoremediation was used after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster to remove radioactive strontium and cesium.
“For the majority of the seizures we examined, the department could not verify that the seizure could advance or was related to a criminal investigation,” said Michael Horowitz, Inspector General, Justice Department. The smallest seizure involved $3,000 confiscated at an airport. Over the past 10 years, the DOJ’s Asset Forfeiture program has yielded over $28 billion.

A member of Russia’s parliament accused the Obama administration of essentially spending a year bombing the Syrian desert as opposed to Islamic State group targets, that American-trained “moderate rebels” had all run off to join terrorist organizations. “(Senator John) McCain accused us of striking out at US-trained insurgents… However, since they have either run away or joined al-Qaeda, hitting them is a mission impossible,”

Video preview: They Killed Him October 25 marked the 10th anniversary of Wellstone's death. Was it accidental or an assassination to silence a sadly missed principled voice? Convincing evidence suggests foul play. More on that below. On October 25, 2002, The New York Times headlined "Minnesota Senator Is Among 8 Dead in Crash," saying: Wellstone "was killed today when his campaign plane crashed approaching a small airport in a wooded region in the northern part of his state." Campaigning for a third term, he "perished along with seven other people when the chartered King Air A100 went down near Eveleth around 10:20 a.m. Central Time, the Federal Aviation Administration reported."

After exploring the Caribbean, Columbus returned to the island of Hispaniola in 1498, known today as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. He had left his brothers Diego and Bartholomew in charge and according to Columbus, conditions had deteriorated in his absence. He decided to increase the terror campaign against the Taino people, ruling with excessive cruelty, causing resentment from the colonists and local indian chiefs alike. Complaints of his brutality reached the Spanish monarchs and in 1500 a Chief Justice was dispatched to bring him and his brothers back to Spain in chains. But Columbus was soon forgiven for his atrocities and granted a fourth and final expedition back to the island of Hispaniola. Upon his arrival Columbus conducted an unparalleled campaign of torture and mass murder. By the time he finally left the island in 1504, the Taino had been reduced from eight million down to 100,000, making Columbus the most prolific serial killer in history. He and his men committed some of the cruelest atrocities against another race ever recorded. Columbus used any pretext as an excuse to kill and torture. Those poor souls who could not pay tribute to him had their hands cut off and were left to bleed to death. Columbus was documented by the chronicles of Las Casas, know as Brev’sima relaci-n, to have partaken in mass hangings, roasting people on spits, burnings at the stake, and hacking young children to death as punishment for the most minor of crimes. He and his men massacred the natives, sometimes hundreds at a time for sport, making bets on who could split a man in two, or cut a head off in one blow. By 1542 there were only 200 Taino remaining on the island and soon afterwords they were considered extinct. The truth about Christopher Columbus - Video

Every time Israel embarks on a new round of wholesale slaughter in Gaza, polls show that more than 90% of Israelis support the butchery. For Israelis, mass-murdering children is a spectator sport. When the IDF starts dropping cluster bombs, white phosphorous, DIME munitions and other horrendous weapons on Gaza, crowds of Israelis pack the hilltops to barbecue meat, drink alcohol and cheer as they watch Palestinian children being blown to bits.

Authored by NASA Senior Water Scientist Jay Famiglietti, originally posted Op-Ed at The LA Times, Given the historic low temperatures and snowfalls that pummeled the eastern U.S. this winter, it might be easy to overlook how devastating California's winter was as well. As our “wet” season draws to a close, it is clear that the paltry rain and snowfall have done almost nothing to alleviate epic drought conditions. January was the driest in California since record-keeping began in 1895. Groundwater and snowpack levels are at all-time lows. We're not just up a creek without a paddle in California, we're losing the creek too. Data from NASA satellites show that the total amount of water stored in the Sacramento and San Joaquin river basins — that is, all of the snow, river and reservoir water, water in soils and groundwater combined — was 34 million acre-feet below normal in 2014. That loss is nearly 1.5 times the capacity of Lake Mead, America's largest reservoir.

For all the freedoms that North Korea lacks, it has one that most Western countries don't: Apparently, you can legally buy and smoke marijuana, doesn't have restrictions, such as for medical use only. marijuana in North Korea is not very strong, bags full roughly £0.50 each. In North Korea, the drug is apparently enjoyed by the country's working class for its medicinal effects and is also seen as a way to unwind and relax. Richter writes about how, with the help of a North Korean intelligence officer, he was about to get into a food market, which locals shop at but visitors are not allowed to see.

Over the July 4th weekend, 82 people were shot in Chicago, including a 16 year-old boy shot by police. Fourteen people were killed. In late May in Tampa Bay, Florida, police shot dead a 29 year-old man in his own home over $2 worth of pot. Acting in accordance with the insane logic of the war on drugs, that alleged drug sale led to a militaristic raid on the young man’s home, which ended in his untimely, violent death. Meanwhile, some of the nation’s most powerful companies—pharmaceutical firms that manufacture opiates like OxyContin and Vicodin—are funding efforts to prohibit the legalization of marijuana. From a must-read investigative report by The Nation’s Lee Fang: [The Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America (CADCA)] and the other groups leading the fight against relaxing marijuana laws, including the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids (formerly the Partnership for a Drug-Free America), derive a significant portion of their budget from opioid manufacturers and other pharmaceutical companies.
Much of what we know about this practice of outsourcing torture is from the harrowing accounts of its victims and survivors who have bravely come forward to tell their stories. One of them is Ahmed Agiza, an Egyptian citizen who lived with his wife and young family in Sweden, where they were seeking refugee status. In December 2001, Ahmed and a friend were apprehended by Swedish police, who turned them over to the CIA. In what was reportedly the Bush administration's first rendition operation, Ahmed and his friend were sent to Egypt, where they were, interrogated, and mercilessly tortured.
