Part Three of Bill Moyer's award winning documentary TORTURING DEMOCRACY deals with the glaring moral and humanitarian injustice of Guantanamo which still festers as an open wound in our national conscience ~ a wound that Obama can no longer ignore: Allen L Roland
There can no longer be any doubt that the Cheney / Bush administration not only lied to the American people about WMD's and Torture but lied to and obstructed the 9/11 commission during its investigation of 9/11.
Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton, the two chairmen of the 9/11 commission, wrote a NY Times editorial on January 2, 2008 that said the CIA or the White House obstructed their investigation ~ and it doesn't get more obvious than this.
"More than five years ago, Congress and President Bush created the 9/11 commission. The goal was to provide the American people with the fullest possible account of the “facts and circumstances relating to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001” ~ and to offer recommendations to prevent future attacks. Soon after its creation, the president’s chief of staff directed all executive branch agencies to cooperate with the commission. The commission’s mandate was sweeping and it explicitly included the intelligence agencies. But the recent revelations that the C.I.A. destroyed videotaped interrogations of Qaeda operatives leads us to conclude that the agency failed to respond to our lawful requests for information about the 9/11 plot. Those who knew about those videotapes ~ and did not tell us about them ~ obstructed our investigation." Stonewalled by the C.I.A.
And do remember that Dick Cheney and George W Bush refused to testify under oath to the 9/11 commission ~ and Cheney insisted that they be interviewed together and off the record.
Moyer's documentary reports that 500 men have been freed from Guantanamo with no explanation and 250 remain in solitary confinement ~ with no charges filed.
So what do you do when your innocent and being politically used ? You will eventually commit suicide
"A Yemeni detainee at Guantanamo Bay has died of an apparent suicide, US military officials said Tuesday. His is the fifth apparent suicide at the offshore US prison, which President Barack Obama supposedly hopes to close by January 2010." Guantanamo Detainee Dies of Apparent Suicide |
Guantanamo is cloaked in secrecy for good reason ~ it is Cheney's greatest lie and rationalization for his unconstitutional acts and crimes against humanity. Guantanamo is literally a Potemkin village ~ a hollow or false construct, physical or figurative, meant to hide the undesirable or potentially damaging political reality of America's war on terror.
The last thing Cheney wants to reveal is that most of these detainees are innocent ~ which explains his comments Monday that the only alternative to holding some suspected terrorists indefinitely would be to execute them, arguing against the Obama administration's plans to close the Guantanamo detainee prison.
Moyer's documentary is an important step toward bringing transparency and eventually truth to this dark moment in our history which, I am convinced, began with the 9/11 cover-up.
One of my readers, Dennis Kaiser, eloquently points out how Obama's continued non-action to this humanitarian outrage is increasingly unacceptable.
"Until we have: 1) restoration of our Constitution, 2) return of habeas corpus, 3) cessation of our illegal occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and a militarial end to this farce called "War on Terror", 4) prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Bush/Cheney administration....we have NO change. The longer no change comes the more implicated in the crimes of war and against humanity and the destruction of our democracy Obama becomes.. He is either For the 'rule of law' or he is against it. In the war crimes and crimes against humanity issue no investigation is required as Cheney is running around admitting to them. That makes Obama's inaction even more deployable. His non-action is actually acceptance. His acceptance makes him an accomplice." But the wheels of justice are slowly turning ~ a federal judge ordered the United States on Monday to publicly reveal unclassified versions of its allegations and evidence justifying the continued imprisonment of more than 100 detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay. |
