New ABC New/Washington Post poll numbers released Monday show Clinton’s support fast eroding. Whether she’ll end up damaged goods too discredited to win remains to be seen.
Maybe her disturbing past caught up with her. It’s hard imagining a worse presidential choice. Previous articles discussed her loathsome record as US senator and secretary of state - a war goddess beholden solely to monied interests at the expense of most others, especially America’s most disadvantaged. A Clinton presidency assures continuing Bush/Obama wars as well as endless new ones - maybe challenging Iran, Russia and/or China belligerently, lunacy if happens.
Voters increasingly dislike her. More on why below. Few remember her involvement with husband Bill’s successful 1992 campaign with distasteful comments like:
“You know, I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession, which I entered before my husband was in public life.”
“I am out here. I am part of the equation. If you elect Bill Clinton, you get me.” And Bill responding when asked about her involvement, explaining: “I always say that my slogan might well be, ‘Buy one, get one free.”
She’s no longer the young woman she was back then. If successful in her president bid next year, she’ll turn 70 during her first year in office. Age didn’t mellow her. It hardened her into the menace she became.
She’s her own worst enemy. New ABC News/Washington poll results show she lost a third of her support since July, a precipitous decline, especially in such a short time.
She’s still the Democrat frontrunner, holding sizable leads over Bernie Sanders and yet to declare possible aspirant Joe Biden. Given her plunging approval rating, she’s got great cause for concern.
For the first time, her support dropped below 50%. It’s hard imagining why any ordinary America backs her.
She has 42% support from Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents - down from 63% in July. Sanders gained 10 points over the same period to 24% backing. Joe Biden rose from 9 - 21% support.
A previous article explained voters rate Clinton poorly on honesty, trustworthiness and transparency. When asked to describe her, “liar” is the word most often mentioned - then “dishonest,” untrustworthy,” and “criminal.”
A 39% honesty and trustworthy rating matches her career low, down 14 points since July. At 46%, her empathy rating for understanding problems of ordinary Americans hit a career low.
Her mainstay support from women plunged from 71% in July to 42% currently. Most voters dislike how she answers questions, suggesting she’s hiding something. Slightly over half say she violated government regulations by using her private server for official business as secretary of state.
At the same time, 56% said her personality and temperament are suitable for high office. She and Republican Donald Trump have near-even in support in a contest matching the two.
Survey results showed overall dissatisfaction with America’s corrupted political process - 72% saying people in politics are untrustworthy. Over 6 in 10 call the system dysfunctional - clear majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents feeling the same way.
Party affiliation differences showed up with Republicans strongly preferring a president from outside the political establishment - why Trump and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson have over half of voter support between them - 33% for Trump, 20% for Carson, all other Republican aspirants in single digits - Jeb Bush, the early favorite, at 8%. Rick Perry already dropped out. Expect many others to follow.
It bears repeating what other articles stressed. Money-controlled duopoly power runs America - a one-party state with two wings. No matter who succeeds Obama in January 2017, business as usual will triumph like always.
