America didn’t eliminate the scourge of fascism in WW II. It shifted its headquarters from Berlin and Tokyo to Washington.
Today, it’s partnered with likeminded allies, waging global war on humanity, destroying fundamental freedoms, risking the unthinkable, potential life-ending nuclear war.
On November 19, the General Assembly’s Third Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Issues adopted a resolution, condemning the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism, and likeminded practices, facilitating racism, xenophobia and intolerance.
A 126-nation majority supported the resolution. Another cowardly 53 countries abstained, including EU states. America, Canada under its new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US-installed Ukraine putschists and US-controlled Palau voted “no.”
In 2014, 115 countries supported a similar resolution. America, Canada and Ukraine alone rejected it.
The resolution condemns holocaust denial. It expresses concern over any forms of Nazism glorification, including former Waffen SS members, anything associated with them, and “unending attempts to desecrate or destroy the monuments (honoring) those who fought (against) Nazism during World War II.”
The Third Committee urged member states to adopt laws denouncing racism in all its forms and act responsibly against violence and other lawless actions, largely targeting members of vulnerable groups.
The resolution stresses the importance of full compliance with international laws, norms and standards with regard to human rights. It cites the importance of countering online hate-mongering and xenophobia - underscoring the necessity for counteraction according to international law.
Russian deputy UN envoy, Yevgeny Zagainov, presented the resolution on the eve of the 70th anniversary of establishing the Nuremberg Tribunal. He called adopting it an important step toward eradicating a universal scourge - very much virulent, headquartered in Washington, operating in Europe, Israel and other notorious rogue states.
A Russian Foreign Ministry statement following Thursday’s vote diplomatically said “(t)he fact that Canada, Palau, the United States and Ukraine voted against this document supported by the overwhelming majority of the UN member-countries and that the delegations of the European Union member-countries abstained from voting causes extreme bewilderment and regret.”
Failure to oppose the glorification of Nazism expresses support for its scourge still virulent today, responsible for endless wars of aggression, threatening fundamental freedoms wherever it exists.
