Russian Premier Warns Against East/West Confrontation

February 17th, 2016

Stephen Lendman

On Saturday, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev addressed Munich Security Conference participants.

He spoke ominously, warning about a new Cold War turning hot, a perilous time in world history because of US-led Western attempts to force-feed their system on independent nations.

Instead of peace and stability, war-ravaged countries struggle to survive. Washington created a monster in Daesh and likeminded terrorist groups.

Rejoicing about the so-called 2010/2011 Arab Spring proved premature. It never bloomed. It was fantasy, not real. Endless US imperial wars rage.

Countries lie in ruins. Tyranny is deeply rooted, democratic values a convenient illusion, notably in Israel, Saudi Arabia and other rogue Gulf States, partnered with America’s imperial war agenda, responsible for millions of deaths.

So-called “Western-style democracy” is responsible for US-led wars on humanity, creating ISIS and other terrorist groups, using them as imperial foot soldiers, threatening global war.

Washington recklessly calls Russia its greatest threat. Is today “2016 or 1962,” Medvedev asked? Are we on the cusp of a US-initiated Cold War turning hot?

He stressed the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, its sovereignty. Balkanizing it “along religious (or other) lines” would be “catastroph(ic) for the entire Middle East.”

US-led attempts to marginalize, contain, weaken and isolate Russia are ill-conceived - dangerous policies risking greater confrontation than already.

“The current architecture of European security…was built on the ruins of WW II, allow(ing) us to avoid global conflicts for more than 70 years,” Medvedev explained.

It succeeded so far because its “principles…were clear to everyone…primarily the undeniable value of human life,” the risk of future global war with super-weapons able to end life on earth.

“(C)ooperation,” not “confrontation,” is vital today to avoid a potentially cataclysmic global tragedy no one wants.

In his important, well-remembered 2007 Munich Security Conference address, Putin decried US-created unipolarity, NATO provocatively expanding east, Washington instigating a new nuclear arms race, destabilizing entire regions, using military might unilaterally or with rogue partners to force its will on independent states.

Nine years later, conditions are worse than ever. America’s rage for dominance threatens world peace.

We have a choice. We can live or perish together. There’s no in between.

Mystifying the sultry blues of "Blue Sun" to the punk-infused anthems like "Brass in Pocket," the band slips into these heterogeneous grooves with greased skids.
