US Media's Pro-Israeli Bias: Response to the Freedom Flotilla Slaughter

June 12th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

In promoting his 2008 book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid," Jimmy Carter said one reason for writing it was "to provoke (unbiased) discussion, which is very rarely heard in this country" on the question of Israel. In America, "any sort of debate back and forth, any sort of incisive editorial comment in the major newspapers, is almost completely absent....There are no significant countervailing voices" to deter Israel from getting away with murder, an illegal blockade, aggressive wars, and the most extreme crimes against humanity; its latest, of course, the massacre of peace activists taking aid to besieged Gazans.

Besides coming from officials and their spokespersons, Israel's propaganda arm, Israel Politik, said "Israel had no choice but to stop the flotilla from breaking the blockade....While Israel was forced to take action in international waters, its actions are supported by international maritime law."

Private Contractors and Covert Wars in Latin America

June 12th, 2010

By Cyril Mychalejko

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) threatened to issue subpoenas against the U.S. Defense and State Departments last month if they continue to refuse to accurately account for billions of dollars spent on private contractors assisting Washington in the 'war on drugs' in Latin America. But McCaskill's concerns raise broader questions about oversight and transparency of a controversial industry and its ever expanding role in Washington's foreign policy.

"We asked for this information from the State Department and the Defense Department (DoD) more than three months ago. Despite our repeated requests, neither Department has been able to answer our questions yet," said U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill at a Senate hearing on May 20.

Shocking Testimonials from the Mavi Marmara survivors. And one Israeli fembot

June 11th, 2010

by Lauren Booth

One of the most striking trends following the flotilla attack has been how quickly Israeli hasbara is being exposed by internet journalists. The doctored IOF audio clips, where amateurs with mock Arab accents hiss ‘Go back to Aushwitz’ to Israeli naval officers. Well they didn’t take long to pull apart did they? Then there are the (so-pathetic-they’re-almost-funny claims the flotilla was linked to Al Quaeda. I laughed out loud to read in an Israeli paper that humanitarian activist (and former US marine) Ken O’Keefe was going to Gaza to; ‘train a commando unit in Hamas.’ I know Ken fairly well. Quite frankly I’m not sure who should be more insulted by this stupidity him or Hamas? Either way flinging the words ‘Hamas’ ‘Jihadists’ and ‘Israel’s security’ around is no longer having the same shock and awe effect on journalists or the public at large.

The Planetary Archetypal Situation on 9/11/2001

June 11th, 2010

By Robert Singer

Recently, in one of those coincidences that don’t happen very often, I had my horoscope read by Kristin Reitter, a qualified Astrologer.

I don’t know anything about astrology and it never occurred to me to verify some of my more outrageous assertions, i.e. 9/11 was The Most Important Issue in the History of the Universe with astrologers. [1]

In the middle of the reading of my horoscope it occurred to me that Astology could cast a cloud over my premise that 9/11 was a Metaphysical Catechism (Test).

I was in trouble. No matter what my beliefs about astrology, I could not in good conscience write, 9/11 was The Most Important Issue in the History of the Universe if “The planetary archetypal situation was not dramatically clear."

I proceeded to ask, "Kristin, wait...before we go any further, I need to know on a scale of 1 to 10 the astrological significance of 9/11/2001.

It was a long 5 minutes as she researched the date and looked at the chart.

When she told me that it was a TEN, she confirmed my belief that 9/11 was metaphysical. I breathed a sigh of relief.

The Basic Archetypal Background of September 11, 2001

“The events are immensely complex, beyond words really, with so many causes, consequences, and dimensions. But the planetary archetypal situation was dramatically clear. In the last few weeks the planetary alignment that represents the heaviest—the darkest, most weighty, mortally serious, historically grave—of all archetypal combinations, the Saturn-Pluto alignment, reached exactitude, an opposition.

The first two weeks of this month in particular were critical, as the Sun and Full Moon moved into a rare and extraordinarily precise grand cross (two oppositions--Saturn with Pluto, Sun with Moon--both 90 degree square to each other).”

Disaster in the Gulf

June 11th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

As more information surfaces, a potentially biblical disaster is unfolding, threatening to make vast parts of the Gulf dead zones, animals and plant species so contaminated and unsafe that Gulf communities may face "the total end of fishing, according to Carl Safina, Blue Water Institute ocean biologist.

"I don't see how the fish populations will be able to withstand what has happened. The basis of their livelihoods is being destroyed. This is not a temporary issue. Those things don't come back the day the oil stops," and no end of it so far is in sight.

On May 30, the UK Independent's Emily Dugan headlined "Oil spill creates huge undersea dead zones," according to oceanologists and toxicologists, saying:

If experts are right, "the sea's entire food chain could suffer years of devastation, with almost no marine life in the region escaping its effects."

Seize BP While it Still Has an Asset!

June 11th, 2010

by Len Hart, The Existentialist Cowboy

BP is busted. Penalties already assessed BP exceed 60 $billion. The cost of the cleanup will run about $760m but that figure was 'operative' before the last failed attempt to plug up the hole. Damages increase daily, hourly as the hole remains unplugged, as the oil continues to spew!

Associated Press reports that damages have already wiped out some $75 billion in market value. By every definition, BP is bankrupt, finished! Kaput!

Firm's stock sale nearly twice as large as any other institution; Represented 44 percent of total BP investmentThe brokerage firm that's faced the most scrutiny from regulators in the past year over the shorting of mortgage related securities seems to have had good timing when it came to something else: the stock of British oil giant BP.According to regulatory filings, RawStory.com has found that Goldman Sachs sold 4,680,822 shares of BP in the first quarter of 2010. Goldman's sales were the largest of any firm during that time. Goldman would have pocketed slightly more than $266 million if their holdings were sold at the average price of BP's stock during the quarter. --Goldman Sachs sold $250 million of BP stock before spill

Both reports are reviewed below.

Russia-US-Iran: Nuclear juggling

June 11th, 2010

Eric Walberg

Relations between Russia and Iran highlight the intractable problems of nuclear diplomacy.

Brazil accused the US of double standards, and Turkey insisted Thursday that rejecting the deal with Iran, which calls for Tehran to ship around half its stock of low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for enriched uranium suitable for research and medical use, would be “unreasonable” and said that a US push for fresh sanctions on Tehran was creating an “absurd situation”. “Those who speak to this issue should eliminate nuclear weapons from their own country and they should bear the good news to all mankind by doing that,” Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan said while attending a UN conference in Rio de Janeiro.

In their own words: Survivor testimonies from Flotilla 31 May 2010

June 10th, 2010

Written by Free Gaza Team

For three days as they were held in captivity and unable to speak on their own behalf, Israel presented the massacre against civilian passengers on the Mavi Marmara as self defense against a “lynching.” Now that the passengers are returning to their home nations, the global community is hearing a much different story, not just regarding the incident but also their treatment afterwards once in custody.

Obama's National Security Strategy (NSS): A New Direction or Continuity

June 9th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

Periodically, US administrations prepare NNS documents for Congress, outlining their major national security concerns and plans for addressing.

On May 27, the White House Office of the Press Secretary announced Obama's saying it's to "Advanc(e) Our Interests: Actions in Support of the President's National Security Strategy." UN ambassador Susan Rice called it a "dramatic departure" from the Bush administration. The White House claims it's "to keep the American people safe" and advance the nation's "values and ideals."
