ENOUGH HAPPY TALK

July 29th, 2009

By Martha Ireland

A recent article, "Happiness Consultants Won't Stop A Depression" by Chris Hedges really hit home for me.

I live with a man who wants to believe that if you put a "positive" spin on something, that something will magically become truly positive.

This sort of crazy culturally induced wishful, magical, narcissistic, childish, cowardly thinking and intellectual, psychological & spiritual laziness makes me absolutely insane.

OF ELEPHANTS AND BLUE DOGS

July 29th, 2009

by Mary Pitt

While the Congressional "elephants" are straining at the gnat of Obama's health care plan, the Blue Dogs are busily gorging on the poisonous fat being spread before them by the voracious and monopolistic insurance and pharmaceutical companies, the citizens for whom they were chosen to protect are continuing to be victimized and destroyed. The handwriting is on the wall to tell us that nothing good is going to come of the enthusiasm with which the American people voted for the longed-for "change".

Neither of these mythical creatures sounded an alarm about the trillions of American dollars that were simply strewn to the wind in the misguided effort to "bring democracy to Iraq". There was then no outcry about the state of the national debt, no discussion of deficit financing, only great glee at the prospect of all the pork that would be rained upon their constituents and campaign donors. There was no mention of anything resembling a budget. It was all "off-budget appropriations" in the interest of "national security" Why? Because Bush, Cheney, and Company said it was necessary!

Do you deserve to die?

Do your friends and family?

The Forgotten Question in the Health Care Debate

Michael Collins

Scenario 1: You've just been diagnosed with a cancer of the lymphatic system. You're told that it requires a procedure within the next two weeks. Unfortunately, you were laid off from your corporate job 11 months, 30 days ago. You are on your last day of COBRA. Your company retirement and savings are all gone. You can't afford the $1,200 a month premium needed to continue your coverage. Without the operation, you will die. Do you deserve to die?

Scenario 2: Your spouse has a long history of illness. Then you discover she has a virulent infection that, if untreated, threatens to disable her to the point where she's immobile and requires 'round the clock medical care. You work for yourself. While you have catastrophic health insurance, it doesn't cover the needed treatment nor does it provide for nursing care. Does your wife deserve to experience this untreated sickness and suffering until her premature death?

Conspiracies involve lower officials

July 28th, 2009

Karin Friedemann

Many blame Ashcroft, Cheney, and Bush for ongoing campaigns against activists, politicians and organizations that try to help Arabs and Muslims.

Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner, a long time Palestinian rights advocate, told supporters that he believes former US Attorney General John Ashcroft personally orchestrated a sting operation to remove him from office. As in previous cases, strategic “media update sessions” put the media into a predatory frenzy before the accused even went to trial. Media accusations often do not even coincide with the actual charges.

Lou Dobbs undermines CNN's credibility

July 28th, 2009

Mary Shaw

With Fox News tilted firmly to the right and MSNBC leaning more and more to the left, CNN is commonly regarded as the more moderate, more balanced cable news alternative.

And that generally seems to be the case, with a couple of exceptions, the most glaring of which is Lou Dobbs.

In recent years, Dobbs gained notoriety for his loud opposition to U.S. immigration policy, especially where brown-skinned people are concerned.

But now Dobbs is sinking even further into Wingnutland.

Putting-Off the Moment of Truth in Pakistan

July 28th, 2009

By: Peter Chamberlin

An article in today’s Washington Post (“Pakistani Pledge to Rout Taliban In Tribal Region Is Put on Hold”) reveals that Obama’s Pakistani war plans have become bogged-down in a foggy uncertainty with the certain knowledge that the Pakistanis do not play well with others. They are leagues beyond us in the art of political and military play-acting.

The diabolical genius of the Pakistani game plan can now begin to be seen.

"Why would I push them to start an offensive when they have 2 million people they have to protect first?" Holbrooke said.

Their military actions in Swat and NWFP have flushed of millions of people from their homes, creating this monumental internal catastrophe. By flushing these restless refugees toward the eastern border with India and southward, putting them between the Pakistani Army and the big battlefield of S. Waziristan, a buffer was created between the government and international opinion.

THE FOURTH STAGE OF AMERICA'S KARMIC DESTINY IS BANKRUPTCY

July 27th, 2009

Allen L Roland

The karmic destiny of America has four staqes and we have already reached stage four, Bankruptcy ~ where America continues to pour its economic resources onto global military misadventures, such as Afghanistan, while draining the economic health and safety of its citizens:

Because of the Cheney/Bush administration's illegal needless war and occupation of Iraq ~ where arrogance fully embraced incompetence and where hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians have been killed and maimed ~ America started on the path of its own karmic downfall and Obama has done nothing to stop its momentum with his ongoing military buildup in Afghanistan.

The Significance of Darfur in Sudan

In a word - oil in the form of huge potential reserves with Chinese companies involved in discovering them. Washington's genocide claim is a hoax. Yet it's trumpeted by the media and foolhardy celebrities used as props for the charade. By 2007, China was getting up to 30% of its oil from Africa prompting its "extraordinary series of diplomatic initiatives that left Washington furious" and determined to respond.

Bruno: A Glimpse into Zionism?

July 27th, 2009

By Gilad Atzmon

Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest invention is a grotesque Austrian gay celebrity who comes to America to try to boost the ratings of his fashion television program. Bruno is one of the most repugnant characters ever to appear on the big screen, something Baron Cohen probably takes pride in. Bruno is Cohen’s third gross character in succession. At times it seems as if Cohen is seeking pleasure in being repelling. After mimicking an ignoramus stereotype of a non-black suburban male who revels in Black and Jamaican culture (Ali G) and a Kazakh misogynist, racist buffoon and anti-Semite (Borat), Bruno can be grasped as another creative attempt to challenge the Western liberal discourse.
