Assad Vows to Defend Syria’s Homeland

July 28th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Syria is one of many direct and proxy wars Obama continues waging - breaching his campaign pledge to restore peace.

His agenda is polar opposite - raping, pillaging and destroying one country after another, new targets always in mind, perhaps directly confronting Russia and/or China before leaving office.

Bodies piling up worldwide attest to his barbarity - a rogue leader risking global conflict, even nuclear confrontation, influenced by neocons infesting his administration and Congress - deploring peace, wanting endless wars. On Sunday, Assad addressed officials and members of public organizations, vocational syndicates, as well as industrial, trade, agriculture and tourism groups.

Whitewashing Sandra Bland's Murder

July 28th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Every 28 hours on average, a Black man, woman or child is murdered by killer cops in America. Sandra Black is one of their victims - a high-profile one, unlike countless nameless, faceless, unreported victims of US police brutality, at times resulting in unaccountable murders routinely whitewashed when investigations are conducted.

Police traffic stops, even violent ones, followed by wrongful short-term detentions, aren't reasons for suicides - unless perhaps victims are so mentally ill and unstable their behavior is unpredictable.

Bland was a young Black civil rights activist - a vocal Black Lives Matter movement exponent, outspoken against police brutality in America.

Was she targeted for this reason? Was she violently assaulted by a cop on assignment to get her arrested on false charges - then murdered in custody to silence her? She was eagerly looking forward to her new job at Prairie View A&M, her alma mater. She had every reason to live, not die. Media reports on her case are scandalous - ignoring the most important issues needing exploring and explaining.

Puerto Rico’s Debt Crisis

July 28th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Officially called a “Free Associated State or Commonwealth,” Puerto Rico has been exploited as a US colony since 1898. Its elected governor is powerless - little more than a potted plant ruled by Congress with America’s president its head of state.

Washington never granted islanders control of their lives, welfare and destiny. They have no say over foreign relations, commerce and trade, their air space, land and offshore waters, immigration and emigration, nationality and citizenship, currency, maritime laws, military service, US bases on its territory, constitutionality of its laws, jurisdictions and legal procedures, treaties, radio and television, communications, agriculture, its natural resources and more.

The Great Satan

July 27th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

No nation deserves this designation more than America - the world's leading global menace. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is right condemning it. US policies speak for themselves. They include:

● waging endless direct and proxy wars of aggression against invented enemies threatening no one;

● risking WW III by recklessly challenging Russia and China;

● imposing illegal sanctions on targeted countries unilaterally or jointly with other Western nations bullied to go along (what only the Security Council is authorized to do);

● serving monied interests exclusively at the expense of popular ones;

● allying with many of the world's most ruthless despots;

● partnering with Israeli wars of aggression as well as supporting occupation harshness - by supplying billions of dollars in annual (mostly) military aid and much more;

● governing under a homeland police state apparatus targeting Muslims, poor Blacks, Latino immigrants, environmental and animal rights activists, whistleblowers exposing government wrongdoing, as well as anyone challenging ruthless policies no one should accept.

Millions of corpses attest to America's barbarity - a rogue state threatening world peace.

What is Conservative Populism?

July 27th, 2015

SARTRE

Do you consider yourself a conservative? Many well intentioned but misguided souls like to maintain a fallacy that they are part of the right-wing; especially when they support Republicans. These bewildered partisans have bought into an illusion that a conservative is a supporter of the status quo. They often believe that any politician who proclaims they are a champion of a GOP regime are really traditionalists. Some even go so far as to consider it impossible for any Democrat to hold any sentiments that could possibly resemble a conservative viewpoint.

While it is difficult to speak well of any Democrat over the last century, it is becoming exceedingly routine to reject Republican party loyalists as just camouflaged clones for socialist policies. Calling yourself a conservative, doesn’t mean you walk the walk . . .

Greece: Approving Its Own Death Sentence

July 27th, 2015

Vby Stephen Lendman

Two earlier bailouts failed. Repeating what didn't work expecting a different result is the clearest definition of political and economic insanity - creating even greater debt peonage impossible to resolve without defaulting or demanding creditors take major haircuts.

Even then, recovery and restoring economic growth won't happen while trapped under Eurozone straightjacket rules - preventing Greece from controlling its own monetary and fiscal policy, as well as its currency able to devalue to stimulate exports.

Fascists running things pretending to be social democrats care only about their own self-interest - what best serves them at the expense of millions of suffering Greeks and a death sentence for its economy.

Human Rights in Venezuela

July 27th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

America gives them short shrift, abusing them horrifically worldwide. Venezuela enshrines them in its Constitution. They're fundamental and matter.

Pro-right-wing Foro Penal Venezolano (FP) abuses human rights it claims to defend. It gets USAID and National Endowment of Democracy (NED) funding to instigate violence - destabilizing Venezuela, aiming to replace its Bolivarian government with fascist rule.

Last week, the State Department honored it with its annual Human Rights Defender Award - given exclusively for political reasons, not to individuals or groups "show(ing) exceptional valor and leadership in advocating for the protection of human rights and democracy," as the State Department claims.

America is the most egregious human rights violator on a global scale. It tolerates democracy nowhere - at home or abroad.

FP supported last year's US orchestrated street violence - revolt of the rich in affluent and well-off Caracas and other communities exclusively.

Israel's War on Palestinian Statehood

July 27th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Key Israeli objectives in keeping Gaza besieged and waging last summer's aggression include preventing Palestinian self-determination as well as Hamas/Fatah unity.

Israel doesn't want Hamas and likeminded groups destroyed. It wants them weakened, contained, isolated in the case of Gaza, and used as pretexts for occupation harshness.

It allies with takfiri terrorists to achieve its objectives - notably the Islamic State (IS). It supplies weapons. It treats its wounded in Israeli hospitals. Along with Washington, it uses Islamic terrorist elements as strategic assets. On Sunday, five car bombs were detonated simultaneously in central Gaza City - reportedly targeting Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Vehicles they owned were struck.

Greek Bailout Deal: Greatest Ever Macroeconomic Management Disaster

July 26th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis expressed this view in a BBC interview. "This program is going to fail whoever undertakes its implementation," he said.

Asked how long it would take, he said it "failed already." It's Greece's death sentence on top of all the human pain and suffering imposed - unconscionable governance no one should accept.

Pressure in Brussels was intense, said Varoufakis. Monied interests and their representatives don't negotiate. They demand - their way, or else. "We were given a choice between being executed (or) capitulation," Varoufakis explained. Tsipras chose the latter option instead of the obvious alternative one: voluntary Grexit, leaving a sinking ship, defaulting on odious debt, regaining monetary and fiscal control along with regaining full national sovereignty beholden to no foreign powers.

Thousands of Refugees Flee Northward from Greece

Thousands of Refugees Flee Northward from Greece

The precarious situation in Greece means that thousands of refugees are making their way to northern Europe. There, the reaction is increasingly panicked: The Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer has announced plans to fend off refugees with "rigorous measures." In Germany, there have been several attacks on asylum facilities. In Italy and the Czech Republic, there were demonstrations and riots.
