Why Hillary Clinton Would Be a Weak Presidential Nominee for Democrats

May 15th, 2015

Eric Zuesse

If Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic Presidential nomination, then how strong a candidate will she be against a Republican nominee who, as a representative of the conservative party, is proudly and openly supporting conservative positions?

Taegan Goddard of The Week headlines on May 11th, “Is Hillary Clinton Flip-Flopping or Just Evolving?” and he notes several issues on which she has rhetorically veered to the left recently. He further notes that one of the things that probably shaved a crucial few percentage-points off the losers in previous Presidential general-election contests and caused them to lose, such as John Kerry and Mitt Romney, was the given candidate’s primary-campaign rhetorical flip-flops that had been made during the Party’s primaries in order to be able to wrap up that candidate’s Party-base so as to win its Presidential nomination and so be able to become a participant in the general-election contest.

Political Prisoner Hassan Diab's Letters

May 15th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

In November 2008, Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested Diab for a crime he had nothing to do with - a 1980 Paris synagogue bombing.

Not a shred of evidence connects him to it. He's a former University of Ottawa and Carleton University sociology professor - terminated without just cause.

He's a Lebanese national with dual citizenship. He has no criminal record whatever or involvement with the group accused of the Paris bombing.

In June 2011, an Ottawa judge ordered him extradited to France. Several appeals for justice failed.

Canada's Supreme Court refused to hear his case. A day after last November's decision, he was extradited. His lawyer, Donald Bayne, said he wasn't even given time to see his family before departure.

Saudis Violate Agreed On 5-Day Truce in Yemen

May 15th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Riyadh's proposed 5-day ceasefire is a duplicitous thinly veiled PR stunt ignoring what matters most - halting Obama's aggression using Saudis and other regional rogue states as convenient proxies to do his dirty work.

Announced short-term cessation of hostilities is meaningless. Rogue states operate by their own rules.

Saudi terror-bombing continued after its proposed pause, effective 11PM Tuesday evening local time.

Multiple airstrikes targeted Hajja, Saada and Lahij province - in blatant violation of announced truce. Dozens were killed or wounded. Residential areas and civilian infrastructure were struck.

Non-Religious Population Is Soaring in America

May 15th, 2015

Eric Zuesse

The Pew Research Center on Religion & Public Life is reporting, in their poll of 35,000 Americans, that during the seven years from 2007 to 2014, the numbers of religiously “Unaffiliated” were soaring, the numbers of Christians were plunging, and the numbers of adherents to non-Christian faiths were rising substantially but not nearly as much as were the numbers of “Unaffiliated.”

This report, issued on May 12th, is headlined, "America’s Changing Religious Landscape: Christians Decline Sharply as Share of Population; Unaffiliated and Other Faiths Continue to Grow.”

Mandatory Childhood Vaccine Legislation Proposed In Congress For Nationwide Implementation

May 14th, 2015

by Lily Dane

A Florida Congresswoman has introduced legislation that will send chills down the spine of any liberty-loving American.

On May 1, Frederica S. Wilson (D-FL-24) presented H.R.2232 – Vaccinate All Children Act of 2015.

From the bill:

REQUIREMENT.—For a State or a political subdivision or other public entity of a State to be eligible to receive a grant under this section, the applicant shall demonstrate to the Secretary’s satisfaction that, subject to paragraphs (2) and (3), the State requires each student enrolled in one of the State’s public elementary schools or public secondary schools to be vaccinated in accordance with the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

That’s right. Wilson wants to require children who attend public schools to receive every shot on the CDC recommended vaccine schedule.

Have you seen that vaccine schedule lately?

Fidel Castro's Remarks on the 70th Anniversary of Russia's Great Patriotic War

May 14th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Fidel is a living legend - bigger than life, remarkable by any standard, a hero to Cubans and millions worldwide.

He recovered from serious illness that nearly took him. His inner strength and redoubtable spirit saved him. He's an inspiration to us all.

In August, he'll reach age 89. His intellect and spirit remain strong. The flesh isn't what it used to be - nor for most anyone after 80 years.

He still writes occasional articles and reflections - always with important thoughts to convey - this time on "Our right to be Maxist-Leninists."

His article was published the day before Russia's stunning V-Day commemoration - a glorious tribute to millions of heroes who saved their Motherland, Europe and beyond from the scourge of fascism.

The Early Signs of Whom The Next U.S. President Will Likely Be Presidential Polls Look Confusing Regarding Bernie, But Downright Bad Regarding Hillary & All Republicans

May 14th, 2015

Eric Zuesse

The top thing that I look for in polling-results this early in a Presidential race, is the ratio of “Favorable” or “Positive,” to “Unfavorable” or “Negative” ratings, regarding each candidate. These ratings tap into the public’s sentiments concerning each individual candidate, instead of into mere name-recognition; and they’re also not comparing the candidates with each other, which most voters at so early a stage in the Presidential contest can’t yet do in any reliable way. When respondents are being permitted to indicate not just their pro-or-con direction but also the strength of their feelings regarding the given candidates, then the most meaningful ratio is produced.

One such poll was just issued: On May 11th, the GWU “GWBattleground” poll was published, and it offered its 1,000 respondents both the favorable-unfavorable, and also the degree-or-intensity, parameters; and, so, it can provide an unusually reliable indication, at such an early date, concerning whom the serious contenders will likely turn out to be when this contest matures.

Subject: US Defense Department's Fabricated Chinese Threat

May 13th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

The whole world knows China threatens no other nation. Its foreign policy is polar opposite America's.

Like Russia, it deplores war. It promotes peace, stability and mutual cooperation among all nations.

It prioritizes economic growth and development. Its accomplishments over the past three and a half decades reflect one of the great success stories in modern times - enough to roil officials in Washington.

It's becoming the world's preeminent economic power by any measure. It's a powerhouse independent nation. Allied with Russia, it's a major deterrent to US global hegemony.

Kiev's Ongoing Aggression on Donbass

May 13th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Minsk II ceasefire terms didn't end conflict. Kiev breached them straightaway - the way it did after two previous 2014 agreements. Nothing its fascist regime agrees to is worth the paper it’s written on.

Low-level conflict continues. A previous article quoted US-controlled puppet Ukrainian president Poroshenko on state-controlled television saying:

"The war will be over only when Ukraine regains control of Donbass and Crimea."

Iran's Humanitarian "Rescue" Ship to Yemen

May 13th, 2015

by Stephen Lendman

Washington wants mass Yemeni casualties. It prioritizes overwhelming human suffering as a strategy to defeat resistance to its proxy war of aggression.

Iran is the region's most prominent peacemaker. It vows not to let Yemen become another Gaza. It intends trying to deliver vital humanitarian aid despite US/Saudi efforts to block it.

On Saturday, a cargo ship named "Rescue" set sail for Yemen. It carries 2,500 tons of medical supplies, food, water, tents and other needed aid.

On board are human rights workers, doctors, other medical professionals, anti-war activists and Iranian journalists.
