Turnabout is Fair Play - Cuba and Ukraine

May 1st, 2014

cubancrisis
Russia's response to United States and European Union efforts in Ukraine represents a more restrained, lower stakes version of the response by the U.S. to the installation of nuclear missiles in Cuba by the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1962. Today, the headline above could be inverted to read:

Russia Blockades Ukraine, Tells US to 'Lay Off"

More than 50 years ago, U.S. President John F. Kennedy initiated a naval blockade of Cuba based on photographic evidence of medium range nuclear missile on the island just ninety miles from Florida. In his address to the nation of October 22, 1962, the president declared:

Fact Checking Scoundrel Media Lies

May 1st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Edward Herman and David Peterson contributed an important chapter to a forthcoming cutting edge book on Ukraine.

It's titled "Flashpoint in Ukraine: How the US Drive for Hegemony Risks World War III." Watch for it. It's coming soon. Amazon lists it.

Herman and Peterson explain Western propaganda "in overdrive," saying:

"(D)eeply ingrained Cold War ideology remains in Western capitals and their political and intellectual culture."

"It's best understood as a dichotomous or binary system: One side is 'good,' the other side is 'evil.' "

"One side acts on behalf of universal values, the other acts out of narrow self-interests."

Putin v. Kerry

May 1st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Putin's statesmanship embarrasses Kerry. Both men are geopolitical opposites.

Putin represents responsible leadership. Kerry shames the office he holds.

On April 29, Putin addressed Ukrainian crisis conditions forthrightly. On the same day, Kerry irresponsibly addressed the Atlantic Council.

In 1961, it was established to support NATO. It's headquartered in Washington. It supports America's global agenda.

Past and current members include a rogue's gallery of reliable US imperial supporters.

They include Henry Kissinger, George Schultz, James Schlesinger, James Baker, Zbigniew Brzezinski, James Jones, Condoleezza Rice, Richard Holbrooke, Susan Rice, and an array of current and former top military officials.

Ukraine Hypes a Nonexistent Russian Threat

April 30th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

For the first time since WW II, overt fascists hold real power in Europe. They hold major government posts.

They menace regional stability. They threaten world peace. Ukraine is Exhibit A.

Olexander Turchynov is illegitimate coup-appointed putschist president/parliament chairman.

He's Ukrainian armed forces commander-in-chief. He's Batkivshchyna/All-Ukrainian Union/Fatherland party deputy chairman.

He's militantly fascist. He deplores democracy. He prioritizes hardline rule. He tolerates no opposition.

He hyped the Big Lie. He did so to create a nonexistent enemy.

He did it to generate fear. He acted to enlist greater Western support. Washington provides plenty. So do rogue EU allies. Turchynov wants more.

Confronting Russia and China Militarily

April 30th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Washington's imperial agenda reflects madness. Overreach may be its undoing. Potential global war threatens everyone. On Tuesday, Obama ended his Asian trip. Confronting China was prioritized. On April 28, Stripes headlined "Obama's Asia trip yields better military ties but no trade concessions," saying:

He returned home "partly successful." In Japan and South Korea, he reaffirmed post-WW II ties.

"In Malaysia, he made strategic inroads in a country that’s long been one of China's closest friends in Southeast Asia."

He firmed up Washington's chokehold colonization over the Philippines. A new 10 year military agreement solidified it. More on it below.

Unprecedented Settlement Construction Exposes Sham Peace Talks

April 30th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Talks began last July. They were dead on arrival. No resolution whatever was achieved. Israel abhors peace.

It craves violence and instability. It doesn't negotiate. It demands. It's all take. It's no give. Peace talks mock legitimacy.

So did multiple earlier rounds. They began decades earlier. They achieved nothing. Things are far worse now than then.

They're a deplorable charade. Both sides agreed to continue them until April 29. D-day arrived. Resolution remains as distant as ever. Chances for peace are nil. Believing otherwise is fantasy.

Throughout months of talks, Israeli lawlessly demolished over 500 Palestinian homes and structures. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported it.

Multiple Ways Kleptocrats and Militarists Fleece Americans

April 29th, 2014

James Petras

Introduction

American living standards are plunging and it’s not simply because they are paid less, work longer (or shorter hours) under highly stressful workplace conditions and pay a higher percentage of their income for health and pension coverage. The ‘workplace’ is only one of several locations where American working people are experiencing a sharp decline in living standards. The new oligarchical Kleptocrats and political elites have elaborated new ways to fleece Americans. These include:

(1) Increased costs and declining quality of internet, cable and other communication systems.

(2) Intensive pervasive and perpetual surveillance by punitive espionage agencies eroding personal freedoms and violating the confidentiality of personal, political and business decisions affecting everyday life.

(3) Large scale, repeated financial swindles by the most active and influential private and publicly trading investment companies resulting in the loss of hundreds of billions of dollars in pensions and savings for tens of millions of middle and working class investors.

Holocaust Remembrance Day Duplicity

April 29th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Remembrance Day is commemorated annually. It's on the Hebrew calendar's 27th day.

This year it runs from sundown April 27 to sunset April 28. Its 2013 theme is "1944: From Extermination to Liberation."

On April 27, six holocaust survivors lit torches. They did so during Yad Vashem holocaust museum ceremonies. Israeli officials laid wreaths.

Holocaust victim names were publicly recited all day. Much more takes place annually.

Never forget. Never again, was said. Hollow words. Other holocausts go unmentioned. Horrific ones exceed Hitler's final solution. More on this below.

At 10AM local Israeli time Monday, sirens echoed across Israel. Normal activity stopped. A ritual silence followed. Radio and television stations observed it.

Holocaust imagery is duplicitous. It rationalizes occupation harshness. It ignores Israeli state terrorism.

Russia Bashing Escalates

April 29th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It bears repeating what previous articles stressed. Washington bears full responsibility for Ukrainian crisis conditions.

Russia alone goes all-out to resolve them responsibly. It doesn't matter. Propaganda wars rage.

Brazen lies repeat. Lawless sanctions were imposed. New ones followed. On Sunday, Obama's deputy national security advisor Tony Blinkin said:

"We're going to save a little news for Monday but what I can tell you is this. We will be looking to designate people who are in (Putin's) inner circle, who have a significant impact on the Russian economy."

"Starting this week, in co-ordination with our allies and partners, we'll be exerting additional pressure on people closest to Putin, the companies they control, the defense industry, all of this."

More Lawless US Sanctions on Russia

April 29th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

On April 28, a duplicitous White House press secretary statement said in part:

"The United States has taken further action today in response to Russia's continued illegal intervention in Ukraine and provocative acts that undermine Ukraine's democracy and threaten its peace, security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity."

"Since April 17, Russia has done nothing to meet its Geneva commitments and in fact has further escalated the crisis." "Russia's involvement in the recent violence in eastern Ukraine is indisputable."

"Consequently, today the United States is imposing targeted sanctions on a number of Russian individuals and entities and restricting licenses for certain US exports to Russia."

"The Department of the Treasury is imposing sanctions on seven Russian government officials, including two members of President Putin's inner circle, who will be subject to an asset freeze and a US visa ban, and 17 companies linked to Putin's inner circle, which will be subject to an asset freeze."
