Iran's Legal Right to Enrich Uranium Challenged

February 3rd, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

It's been that way for years. Iran fully complies with Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) provisions. Its nuclear program is peaceful. US intelligence says so. Annually it repeats earlier assessments.

Washington, other Western countries, and Israel know what they won't admit publicly. So do media scoundrels. They target Iran unfairly. They report what's not true.

They hype fear. They spread Big Lies. They claim non-existent existential threats. They do it for political, not security reasons. Iran threatens no one. It hasn't attacked another country in centuries. Its neighbors have no reasons for concern.

Ban Ki-moon Fails to Condemn Israeli Aggression

February 3rd, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Since last weekend, Israel attacked Syria multiple times. Doing so was premeditated, unprovoked aggression.

Fundamental UN Charter provisions were violated. Israeli officials refused comment. For days, America was silent.

On January 30, anonymous US officials said Israeli officials informed Washington in advance.

Make no mistake. All significant regional belligerent actions reflect joint US/Israeli policy. It's longstanding.

UN Mission Condemns Israeli Settlements

February 3rd, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

On January 31, the UN International Fact-Finding Mission on Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory published damning findings.

Access them in full through the following link.

They revealed multiple international law violations. Settlements compromise fundamental Palestinian human rights.

Violations are "interrelated." They comprise "part of an overall pattern of breaches."

They're "characterized principally by the denial of the right to self-determination and systemic discrimination against the Palestinian people which occur on a daily basis."

Syria’s first line of Defense: Dial 133

February 3rd, 2013

Franklin Lamb

Damascus

There are more than 9000 of them. Predominately young but of all ages. Volunteers everyone. Often risking their lives just to come for a twelve hour work-shift, as many as seven days a week at the Syrian Arab Republic Red Crescent Society (SARCS) Emergency Operation center.

Located at The New Zahera (blooming flowers) Hospital in Damascus just to the south of Yarmouk refugee camp, SARCS has its main emergency response teams HQ. It is here where Syrians, some Palestinians and even a few from the region and the West receive training as qualified para-medics. Maybe two-thirds of those this observer spent a day with a few days ago are students and graduates. Nationalists all, and in the main, but not everyone, supporting the government, but sympathetic towards whomever can end the killing and return life even to “pre-events normalcy”.

Social Inequality in America

February 3rd, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Islamic Awakening requested an article on this topic. Later publication will follow. Specific questions were raised.

Related issues include imperial priorities, permanent wars, political injustice, wealth and privilege at the expense of popular needs, and deepening hardships affecting millions of Americans. America's social contact is targeted for elimination. Bipartisan complicity plans it. Fiscal cliff doublespeak duplicity conceals what's planned. Robbing poor Peter to pay rich Paul is policy. Much worse lies ahead.

Getting to the Next Level of Constructing a New Society
Requires a Common Vision, Strategy and Unity

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers

Once again the corporate mass media got the story wrong. Headlines across the country claimed that occupiers in New York came from households with incomes of over $100,000. The movement writer for The Nation, Allison Kilkenny, interviewed one of the researchers who points out that a lot of these were young people earning under $15,000 per year who were still in school and living with their parents. The most important takeaway lesson from the researcher’s point of view:

The Dark Side of America

February 2nd, 2013

By Timothy V. Gatto

I’ve been staying out of most world events as of late, preferring to watch things unfold silently as there are so many that seem to have all of the answers. I don’t claim to have any answers, but I sure do have a lot of questions. There is a good chance that many of you have the same questions that I have. Sometimes, the questions are more important than the answers. In this 21st Century, there are so many of our leaders that will give us the answers to any questions we ask, they just aren't the right answers. In fact, they lie continuously.

One question I have is why do we support a collection of fundamentalist Islamic States like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE with their Wahhabi and Salafi militant Muslim sects? According to the “official” 9/11 explanation, all of the hijackers came from Saudi Arabia and were members of the extremist Wahhabi Muslim sect. Just like the majority of al-Qaeda.

In the recent fighting in Syria, the so-called “rebels” are made up of mostly non-Syrian Salafi and Wahhabi extremists. They also have support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE and other nations that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council with help from Turkey, United Kingdom, Israel and France. Why put extremists in a country that was ruled by a moderate Alawite?

US Economy: Troubled or All's Well?

February 1st, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Headlines flashed warning signs. Commentaries downplayed them. A Wall Street Journal editorial headlined "As Contractions Go…."

US Q IV GDP shrank, "but not to worry. The report is better than it sounds, the stock market is rocking, and (the Fed will) keep both feet pressed firmly on the monetary accelerator."

The Financial Times headlined "US outlook still clear despite shower," saying:

Predicting recession "based on (-0.1% GDP decline) "is a bit like expecting rain because somebody threw a bucket of water out the window."

The wildcard is "if Congress decides to dump water out the window every month, via across-the-board 'sequester' cuts" expected soon.

According to Bloomberg, "R-Word For US Economy in 2013 is Rebound Not Recession."

Premeditated Aggression: Official Israeli Policy

February 1st, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

A previous article discussed Israel's Wednesday attack on Lebanon. Reports suggested Syrian weapons and munitions heading cross border were struck.

It asked why would Assad send vitally needed weapons and munitions to Lebanon? He needs all he can get.

What's Israel up to? Is something else going on? Is it trying to provoke Syria to retaliate? Does it want to entrap it in all-out war?

Doing so would involve Washington and NATO. It would mean Syria's undoing. It would ignite regional conflict. Potentially it could morph into global war.
