NATO Intervening in Syria

March 8th, 2012

Stephen Lendman

On March 6, the BBC reported Obama saying Washington won't intervene in Syria unilaterally. At the same time, he stopped short of ruling out joint Western aggression. In his first 2012 news conference, he said:

"The notion that the way to solve every one of these problems is to deploy our military, that hasn't been true in the past, and it won't be true now."

"We've got to think through what we do through the lens of what's going to be effective - but also through what's critical for US security interests."

China: Rise, Fall and Re-Emergence as a Global Power: Some Lessons from the Past

March 7th, 2012

James Petras

Introduction

The study of world power has been blighted by Eurocentric historians who have distorted and ignored the dominant role China played in the world economy between 1100 and 1800. John Hobson’s[1] brilliant historical survey of the world economy during this period provides an abundance of empirical data making the case for China’s economic and technological superiority over Western civilization for the better part of a millennium prior to its conquest and decline in the 19th century.

Imperial Rage for War

March 7th, 2012

by Stephen Lendman

America ravages the world one country at a time or in multiples. Post-9/11 alone, millions died. Vast destruction was caused. Human misery caused is incalculable.

Now Syria and Iran are targeted. Disagreement only is on timing, not intent. Neocon Senator John McCain wants Syria bombed. In spring 2007, on a "Straight Talk" campaign tour stop, he responded to a question singing:

"Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran," then lied, saying:

"Iran is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. That alone should concern us but now they are trying for nuclear capabilities. I totally support the President (Bush) when he says we will not allow Iran to destroy Israel."

In 2008, presidential aspirant Hillary Clinton threatened war on Iran, saying:

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm president, we will attack Iran. In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."

Poverty in America -- From Riches to Rags

March 7th, 2012

By Vincent Guarisco

Like a pebble dropped in a pond, everything we do affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others. The choices we make will have far-reaching consequences. Each of us carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse.

I once read that, "short of genius, a rich man cannot imagine poverty." Perhaps. But these days, wealthy imaginations are not as narrow as they used to be as all walks of life (the rich included) witness the massive poverty increase in the land of plenty. Could it be that, for most Americans (the 99%), the blessed era of fruitful sustainability is coming to a close?

‘Ignore the intelligence reports, let’s make war’

March 6th, 2012

Stuart Littlewood

Let’s shred and vapourise a few million more innocents... But first we’ll strangle them with sanctions, say our elected leaders.

Is this what we voted for?

Is this what Western diplomacy has come to in the 21st century?

Thank heaven for Dr David Morrison’s very timely briefing document entitled “Iran hasn’t got an active nuclear weapons programme, says US intelligence” http://www.david-morrison.org.uk/iran/iran-no-nuclear-programme.htm . Morrison is the noted political researcher from Northern Ireland. He sets out the position in easy-reading form so that even our dimmest politicians can understand.

Insanity Bubble: America and Europe - the Leaders Who Could Not Lead

March 5th, 2012

Mahboob A. Khawaja, PhD

“There are the times that try men’s soul”, noted Thomas Paine in his famous “Common Sense”, the lifeline to American independence. In situations of adversity and crises, leaders represent optimism and hope for change, not egoistic agenda and confusion…………… Peace requires new THINKING and New VISIONS that American President and Israeli PM do not have except the WAR agenda. Would Peace and Security grow out of the nowhere? Threatening rhetoric of pre-emptive war strikes on Iran nuclear’s centers and the nuisance of individualistic political indoctrination do not articulate rational and responsible opportunities for rational and intelligent leaders to engage in peaceful dialogue or conflict resolution. Obama appeared confused instead of pragmatic and visionary leaders, his face and body language did not seem to correspond to his movements of lips and the air he was breathing at the AIPAC stage. There is no scarcity of proactive Jewish intellectuals and scholars in Israel and America enriched with political imagination and strong sense of interests of the global humanity and people who love peace and harmony with the Arabs and Palestinians, and likewise, American thinkers and political visionaries who could do a better job than Netanyahu and Obama’s warrior mindsets.

Gaza Gripped by Crisis

March 5th, 2012

by Stephen Lendman

Punishing years under siege, Cast Lead's devastation, and regular IDF air, land and sea attacks took a terrible toll on Gazans physically, economically and emotionally.

In 2010, Doctors Without Borders (Medicine Sans Frontiers) said over half of children under age 12 need mental health help. Moreover, one-third of cases are severe.

Gaza Community Mental Health Program PR Director Husam El Nounou blamed crisis conditions on closure and regular Israeli attacks. Begun in 1993, it stiffened markedly after the second Intifada began.

Following Hamas' January 2006 legislative victory, harsher people traffic and goods restrictions were imposed. In June 2007, siege compounded partial isolation. As a result, hopelessness, virtual imprisonment, and regular Israeli attacks affect all Gazans, especially young children and youths.

Irresponsible Anti-Iranian Fear-Mongering

March 5th, 2012

by Stephen Lendman

Irresponsible anti-Iranian political and pack journalism rhetoric sound ominously like spurious Iraqi WMD threats in the run-up to the 2003 war.

In his January State of the Union address, Obama said:

"Let there be no doubt: America is determined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and I will take no options off the table to achieve that goal."

Ma'an News said Adnan will stop hunger striking following a deal to release him on April 17, according to PA Prison Affairs Minister Issa Qaraqe.

Adnan didn't confirm it, and so far his lawyer didn't comment. The Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) has no information to report.

Khader Adnan: Dying for Justice

March 5th, 2012

by Stephen Lendman

He's a legend in his own time. Global human rights groups, activists, and many others support him.

His extraordinary courage demands acknowledgement and recognition.

Obama and officials in his administration did nothing to help him.

Israel's media took note. American media scoundrels barely notice.

On February 17, FAIR's Peter Hart (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) headlined his Huntington Post article, "Pundits Waiting for a Palestinian Gandhi? Meet Khader Adnan," saying:

He's attracting world attention. He's Palestine's Bobby Sands. Major media scoundrels ignore him. His story begs to be told, but they're largely silent.
