Lynne Stewart Given "Fighter for Justice" Award

October 24th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

Six previous articles highlighted the injustice, culminating in her November 19, 2009 internment at MCC-NY, 150 Park Row, New York, NY, prisoner number 53504-054. Later she'll be transfered to a federal prison to serve 10 years (unless reversed on appeal) for working honorably, ethically, and admirably with distinction for over three decades.

Access the most recent article on her and previous ones through the following link: sjlendman.blogspot.com

Though incarcerated, she's not forgotten and will honored at the Party for Socialism and Liberation's (PSL) November 13 and 14 National Conference on Socialism at the University of Southern California's (UCLA) Los Angeles campus. The program will feature alternatives to capitalism's destructive growth, especially in recent years.

Fox News – The Spin Stops and the Lying, Distortions, and Insults Begin

October 24th, 2010

Richard Backus

Fox News has created the finest propaganda machine since the glorious days of that favorite Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. And done it in the time-honored Republican way, using big bucks provided by the crowd whose sole interests they will pursue, the idle and greedy rich. The coming election has been purchased long before the voting begins by a master plan to gull the public with false claims, ridicule of liberal candidates, mischaracterization of the issues and who caused them, and lavish spending on entertainment designed wholly to keep the viewing public’s attention while indoctrinating them with a totally dishonest version of the truth.

A Party of Panic and Depression

October 24th, 2010

by Len Hart, The Existentialist Cowboy

The administration of Ronald Reagan ushered in a depression of some two years, the longest and deepest since Hoover's Great Depression of the 1930s. Millions were put out of work. Many businesses, entire industries never recovered. The Reagan depression followed a GOP tax cut benefiting only the upper quintile. As a stimulus, it was an obvious failure, yet that's it had been sold. It's how they are always sold.

The real world results: a depression of some two years, a contraction of the economy, a transfer of wealth upward to the upper quintile, the nation's richest 20 percent. A windfall of this nature is not stimulus to invest but, rather, to transfer the gains offshore. There were no net gains in jobs. There was no Reagan-recovery. There were, rather, net losses, declines in employment. The government's own stats prove it. They are available the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau and the U.S. Commerce Department -B.E.A.

Life in Palestinian Refugee Camps

October 24th, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

Besides mass slaughter and destruction, wars create refugees, millions at times, uprooted, displaced and homeless, on their own somehow to survive. Israel's "War of Independence" was no different, dispossessing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, a story Western media reports don't explain or even mention.

In his book, "My Father Was a Freedom Fighter: Gaza's Untold Story," Ramzy Baroud recounted his father Mohammed's story. Born in 1938 in Beit Daras village, he saw it conquered, leveled and erased, except from the memory he took to his grave. A captive in his own land, he lived years as a Gaza Nuseirat camp refugee, raising his family including son Ramzy, dreaming always of going home, struggling as a freedom fighter to end decades of conflict, violence, occupation, and oppression, what Edward Said called "a slow death," shattered hopes, and inexorable toll of its incalculable horror to so many.

Wiki 'Leaks' the Truth About U.S. War Crimes Against Iraq

October 23rd, 2010

by Len Hart, the Existentialist Cowboy

To be expected, the U.S. government/military denounces the latest Wikileaks expose of U.S. atrocities and war crimes against Iraq. That the truth about U.S. atrocities against a sovereign nation is, in the process, of being exposed and documented continues to be a source of chagrin, perhaps, even fear among U.S. officials --especially the guilty and the complicit.

(Reuters) - WikiLeaks released nearly 400,000 classified U.S. files on the Iraq war on Friday, some detailing gruesome cases of prisoner abuse by Iraqi forces that the U.S. military knew about but did not seem to investigate.

The Pentagon decried the website's publication of the secret reports -- the largest security breach of its kind in U.S. military history, far surpassing the group's dump of more than 70,000 Afghan war files in July.

U.S. officials said the leak endangered U.S. troops and threatened to put some 300 Iraqi collaborators at risk by exposing their identities.

Burning the holy books is a loathsome act: Prof. John Hare

October 23rd, 2010

Interview by Kourosh Ziabari

Prof. John E. Hare is the Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology at the Yale University's Divinity School. A British classicist, philosopher and ethicist, he is the author of several well-known and best-selling books in religion and morality including "God and Morality: A Philosophical History", "The Moral Gap", "Ethics and International Affairs", "Why Bother Being Good" and "Plato's Euthyphro".

John Hare has in his background the experience of teaching philosophy at the University of Lehigh from 1975 to 1989. In his "God's Call" book, Hare discusses the divine command theory of morality, analyzing texts in Duns Scotus, Kant and contemporary moral theory.

John joined me in an exclusive interview and answered my questions on the necessity of establishing a universal inter-faith dialogue between the followers of Abrahamic religions, the impacts of materialism on the decline of ethical and moral values and the role of religion in solving the problems of contemporary man. He also answered my special question on the objectionable incidence of Quran burning in the United States on the anniversary of 9/11 attacks.

UN Peacekeepers Complicit in Sex Trade

October 23rd, 2010

by Stephen Lendman

An earlier article, titled "UN Peacekeeping Paramilitarism" explained that although Blue Helmets are supposed to restore order, maintain peace and security, and help people transition to stability, they usually create more conflict than resolution as imperial enforcers, committing human rights abuses against vulnerable people, nearly always unpunished.

HOW WE LOST AMERICA :: A Brief History in Ten Points

October 23rd, 2010

by Bruce Arnold

{ Preface: (a) You have missed the point if you assess this to be pro- or anti- Left or Right, Liberal or Conservative, Democrat or Republican. Those are all deceptive labels that divide and distract. (b) For anyone of predominantly White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (i.e. European) heritage to bemoan "How We Lost America" is the height of hypocrisy. But for the sake of the Cherokee blood in my veins mixed with that of the Aztecs in my children, I continue... }

How 'Do No Evil' Google Avoids US Taxes

October 23rd, 2010

By Numerian posted by Michael Collins

Google, which encourages employees to “Do No Evil”, managed this past quarter to reduce its international tax rate to 2.4% of net income, despite earning most of its revenue in countries like the US, the UK, Germany, and Japan that have corporate tax rates of at least 25%. In comparison, the average recent effective US tax rate for 2,000 companies was 28.3%.

In a report published today in Bloomberg, Google was described as using tax techniques known as the “Double Irish” and the “Dutch Sandwich” to avoid paying taxes in the countries in which it earns most of its revenue. Google uses a Dublin subsidiary and declares that 88% of its overseas sales are generated by this office which employs 2,000 people. Ireland maintains a very low tax rate to encourage foreign investment, but it then adds an important benefit: it allows companies to shift revenues to low-tax countries using transfer pricing. Google shifts its Ireland revenues to The Netherlands (Irish law requires using an EU country for the first leg of this shift). The revenue is then transferred to Bermuda, which has a minimal tax rate. In the meantime, Google uses transfer pricing to shift its expenses to high-tax countries in order to declare tax write-offs.

GORDON DUFF: THANK YOU, AUSTRALIA, FOR SUPPORTING 9/11 TRUTH

October 23rd, 2010

By Gordon Duff

BRACKEN SPEAKING AT RIGHTS CONFERENCE TWO OUT OF THREE AUSTRALIANS: “9/11 A GOVERNMENT CONSPIRACY”

“67% of Australians cite 9/11 government conspiracy in poll. How can a government get so out of touch with reality, so “snookered” by American pressure over the 9/11 coverup that it would wake up one morning looking totally idiotic to its own people?”

When Trades Hall council president and staunch conservative, Kevin Bracken, on the ABC show “Talk Back” publicly aired his views on American government complicity in the 9/11 attacks, host Jon Faine attacked him violently on air, making every attempt to humiliate and silence Bracken. Bracken, known for taking tough stances during his tenure as head of Australia’s Maritime Union, didn’t back down.
