Resistance Turning Tide in Eastern Ukraine

August 26th, 2014

Michael Collins
From Colonel Cassad - English

A Short but Important Update from Colonel Cassad - English: The Colonel Cassad blog is an invaluable source of information on what's really going on in the eastern Ukraine. The resistance militia defending the regions against attacks on civilian centers by the Kiev government seems to have turned a corner based on this information in item number 3) in the full report below. It outlines important advantages gained by the resistance in the battle for Donetsk. The Kiev government's punitive mission, attacking Donetsk and Lugansk in the latest iteration, verges on failure.

This comes as the United States - European Union puppet government in Kiev faces some major crises. The economy is collapsing and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) can't do much to help. Mark Adominis predicted this in Forbes four months ago.

Colonization by Bankruptcy: The High-stakes Chess Match for Argentina

August 26th, 2014

Ellen Brown

"President Fernandez in a nationwide speech on August 19th"

If Argentina were in a high-stakes chess match, the country’s actions this week would be the equivalent of flipping over all the pieces on the board.

David Dayen, Fiscal Times, August 22, 2014

Argentina is playing hardball with the vulture funds, which have been trying to force it into an involuntary bankruptcy. The vultures are demanding what amounts to a 600% return on bonds bought for pennies on the dollar, defeating a 2005 settlement in which 92% of creditors agreed to accept a 70% haircut on their bonds. A US court has backed the vulture funds; but last week, Argentina sidestepped its jurisdiction by transferring the trustee for payment from Bank of New York Mellon to its own central bank. That play, if approved by the Argentine Congress, will allow the country to continue making payments under its 2005 settlement, avoiding default on the majority of its bonds.

MH-17 ‘Investigation’: Secret August 8th Agreement Seeps Out Perpetrator of the Downing in Ukraine, of the Malaysian Airliner, Will Stay Hidden

August 26th, 2014

Eric Zuesse

Regarding what caused the downing of the Malaysian airliner MH-17 in Ukraine on July 17th, the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN, reported in a brief Russian-language news story on August 12th, that four days earlier (August 8th) a representative of that nation's Prosecutor General office, Yuri Boychenko, had said that (as auto-translated by google), “the results [of the investigation] will be announced upon completion of the investigation and with the consent of all the parties who signed the corresponding agreement.” This UNIAN report said that, "As part of the four-party agreement signed on August 8 between Ukraine, the Netherlands, Belgium and Australia [all of which nations are allies of the United States and are cooperating with its new Cold War against Russia], information on the investigation into the disaster Malaysian ‘Boeing-777’ will not be disclosed." In other words: the official 'investigation' is being carried out by four nations that, as U.S. allies, are hostile toward Russia. One of those four nations, Ukraine, is not only a prime suspect in possibly having shot this airliner down, but is currently waging a hot war to ethnically-cleanse the pro-Russian population out of southeastern Ukraine; and the initial 'news' reports in Western 'news' media regarding the downing of MH-17 had stenographically repeated the Ukrainian Goverhment’s line that said that this airliner was probably downed by the local rebels there, who were trying to shoot down the Ukrainian Government's bombers that are constantly bombing them. Some Western 'news' reports even speculated that perhaps Russia itself had shot this airliner down. If the UNIAN news-report is correct, then there is no way that the 'investigation' will be able to be released to the public if it indicates that the Ukrainian Government (which, according to that news-report has veto power over the making-public of the study's findings) is blamed for having shot the airliner down.

Fascism Grips Israel

August 26th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Zeev Sternhell is an Israeli historian, political scientist and outspoken critic of emerging Israeli fascism.

Signs reached a peak during Operation Protective Edge, he says. Democracy granting equality to everyone is nonexistent.

Sternhell deplores Israel's settlement project. He supports Palestinian self-determination. He believes establishing a Palestinian state is essential.

What passes for Israeli democracy "reached a new nadir in the current war," he stresses. Fascist "indicators…definitely exist here."

Steven Salaita's Academic Lynching

August 26th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Criticizing Israel is the third rail in American politics, the major media and academia.

Cynthia McKinney twice lost her congressional seat in 2002 and 2006. Supporting Palestinian rights was costly.

DePaul University denied Norman Finkelstein tenure for his outspokenness and books like "The Holocaust Industry."

It did so despite calling him "a prolific scholar and an outstanding teacher." It went further. It cancelled his classes.

It placed him on administrative leave. He became persona non grata. He resigned following his academic lynching.

Bard College fired Joel Kovel for writing "Overcoming Zionism" and comments like calling Israel "a machine for the manufacture of human rights abuses."

The University of Ottawa fired internationally recognized physics and environmental science expert Denis Rancourt.

A Russian's Explanation of Russia's Aiding the Bombing Victims in Eastern Ukraine

August 25th, 2014

an anonymously written article from "the Vineyard of the Saker," submitted to us by Eric Zuesse

It appears that the Russians got tired of waiting. I suggest that you all carefully parse the Statement of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs I posted earlier today. This is an interesting document because besides an explanation of the Russian decision to move in, it is also, potentially, a legal defense of an unprecedented Russian decision: to overtly violate the Ukrainian sovereignty. Let me explain.

First, the case of Crimea was also a "special case". The Russians were legally present there and, in the Russian rationale, all the "Polite Armed Men in Green" did was to protect the local population to make it possible for the latter to freely express its will. Only after that will was expressed did Russia agree to formally re-incorporate Crimea into Russia. So from the legal Russian point of view, none of the Russian actions in Crimea included any form of violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. I know, most western analysts will not agree, but that is the official Russian stance. And official stances are important because they form the basis for a legal argument.

War from the Shadows

August 25th, 2014

Timothy Gatto

It seems like this well-thought out plan that the people behind the curtain had devised to implement the Americanization of this planet has suddenly blown up in their faces. One does not need to be an economist or work for a think-tank to realize the fact that Washington's schemes and machinations have definitely gone awry... big time. Please try to bear with me as I go through the litany of failed policies that have come so precariously close to setting the World alight.

I'll begin with the Vietnam War which was a horrible military and political mistake. To most Americans we lost lives and trillions from our treasury. We tarnished our image in the eyes of the World and divided the country into a left-right dog and pony show that continues to this day. In the eyes of the average American the Vietnam experience was a bad time for many Americans (and Vietnamese) and it was a losing proposition.

Ukraine's Independence Day

August 25th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

August 24 marks Ukraine's 23rd Independence Day since first commemorated on July 16, 1991.

An August 24, 1991 parliamentary Ukraine Declaration of Independence Act created an independent state.

On August 26, 1991, monuments of communist heroes were removed from public places. October Revolution Square was renamed Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square).

Since 1992, Independence Day is celebrated on August 24. Obama's new friends orchestrated events this year.

They're putschist, racist, xenophobic, ultranationalist, anti-Semitic, neo-Nazi-infested fascists. They control things.

They include a rogue's gallery of societal misfits. They have no legitimacy whatever.

Washington elevated them to power. Ukraine's democratically elected government was ousted. Mob rule replaced it.

Israel's Genocidal Killing Machine

August 25th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

War without mercy is official Israeli policy. Rule of law principles don't matter.

Throughout its entire history, Israel waged genocidal war on Palestine.

Its 1947-48 War of Independence prioritized an exclusive Jewish state with no Arab presence.

Strategy was by any means possible. It included mass murder, destruction and forced displacement.

According to historian Ilan Pappe, Israeli policy involved "large-scale intimidation; laying siege to and bombarding villages and population centres; setting fire to homes, properties and goods; expulsion; demolition; and finally, planting mines among the rubble to prevent any of the expelled inhabitants from returning."

Obama Heading for War on Syria?

August 25th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

In early 2011, Obama initiated proxy war on Syria. It remains ongoing.

Insurgent extremists are recruited, funded, trained, armed and imported from dozens of countries.

Key NATO partners, rogue Arab states and Israel are involved. The same dirty game repeats with disturbing regularity.

Washington targets all independent states. It wants pro-Western stooge regimes replacing them.

It wants unchallenged global control. Direct and proxy wars of aggression are waged for it. Syria remains in the eye of the storm.

Ongoing conflict isn't civil. Not when mostly imported proxies are used. Most Syrians deplore violence.

They oppose internal and external groups committing it. They want peaceful conflict resolution.

They support Bashir Assad overwhelmingly. In a June 3, 2014 election independently judged open, free and fair, they reelected him by an 88.7% majority.
