Damascus Notes: Late night ‘town meetings’ common before the American attack

September 7th, 2013

Where was Professor Richard Falk when I needed him?

Franklin Lamb

Damascus

This observer judges that the Persians, whose bright, articulate students are well known internationally, and with whom he has been honored to discuss international politics on several occasions, may well have met their intellectual match with the Syrian Arabs. This conclusion is based on what is happening among the public in Damascus, not just in the universities and schools, but during impromptu “marketplace of ideas” sessions increasingly taking place on the streets and in coffee houses and places of public gathering.

Last night was one example. Way past this observer’s bedtime, some friends came to see me and wanted to sit outside “for a few minutes” to discuss the latest speculation from Washington and St. Petersburg. We ended up sitting on concrete slabs that divides Al Bahsa Street where no cars are allowed in front of my hotel for more than three hours! Miss Hiba, a wild and wonderful Palestinian journalist born in Yarmouk camp, interpreted for us. The congregation very quickly grew as a few soldiers, shabiha and national defense force types showed up to see what was going on. Some even joined in the fast moving animated discussions.

Stop Obama's War on Humanity: A Personal Statement

September 7th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Candidate Obama pledged hope, peace and change. President Obama delivered duplicity, war and betrayal.

It didn't surprise. His Senate voting record warned. It was way right-of-center. It showed where he stands. His tenure as president does writ large.

He's no man of the people. He's soulless, anti-progressive, anti-populist, anti-labor, anti-fairness, anti-dissent, anti-democratic, anti-freedom, anti-civil and human rights, anti-environmental sanity, and anti-government of, by and for everyone equitably.

His rap sheet exceeds the worst of his predecessors. He's hard-right, reactionary, belligerent, pro-business, and pro-war. He's waging it nonstop. He's doing so on humanity. He's done it throughout his tenure. He assures lots more ahead.

Obama's Planned Lawless Aggression on Syria Based on Lies, Damn Lies and Big Lies

September 7th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Permanent war is official US policy. Throughout his tenure, Obama waged multiple direct and proxy wars.

He's heading for direct intervention against Syria. He's doing it lawlessly. He's doing it based on lies, damn lies and Big Lies.

They launch all wars. Sunshine is the best disinfectant. Truth is the ally of peace. It's the enemy of war. It matters most. It's journalism's first casualty.

On September 5, AP headlined "Russia's Putin calls John Kerry a liar on Syria," saying:

He addressed his human rights council. He recalled watching Tuesday's congressional debate. Kerry was asked about Al Qaeda. He denied it was operating in Syria.

"This was very unpleasant and surprising to me," said Putin. "We talk to (the Americans) and we assume they are decent people, but (Kerry) is lying and he knows he is lying. This is sad."

Russia on Syria: Alternative to Peace is Bloody Chaos

September 7th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov addressed Obama's intended lawless aggression. He did so forthrightly. He did it because it matters.

Russia strongly opposes Washington's regime change plans. It won't stay silent and watch. Interfax reported Lavrov's comments.

He made them ahead of the September 5 and 6 St. Petersburg G20 summit. They're important.

"Contradictory processes that are unfolding in the world mean that resolute action is needed on our part," Lavrov said.

"We will continue to oppose attempts to legitimize change of regime operations under the flag of responsibility for protection,' and to advocate the solution of problems by politico-diplomatic methods with respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and equality of all nations."

Paul Jay: Portrait of an Anti-Zionist Zionist

September 7th, 2013

Introduction by Gilad Atzmon:

A few weeks ago some of us were rather amused to see Max Blumenthal, in conversation with Paul Jay (The Real News Network), deliver the usual anti-Zionist Zionist (AZZ) spiel. After the program many Palestinian solidarity and anti-war commentators were outraged and demanded that Jay provide me with a right to reply. So Jay approached me, asked to clarify a few issues and promised to come back to me shortly with an answer. I didn’t hold my breath because since the incident I had learned a little about Jay’s political affiliations and motivations.

Yesterday, he came back with his answer (follow the link) which he manages to stuff with a pile of confused and jumbled arguments that convey profound intellectual ignorance and are riven with a host of embarrassing contradictions. But one thing was for sure. Gilad Atzmon would not be appearing on Jay’s show. Why? Because, above all, Jay is a coward and must have realised that he doesn’t stand a chance of countering my ideas in front of a camera, not even in his own studio.

I define Jewish Power as the power to divert the attention from Jewish Power and Paul Jay clearly engages in just such an endeavour. In fact, my main contribution to this discourse is probably my capacity to expose this very power and the manner in which it is wielded (Actually, all I do is hand the microphone to my detractors and let their symptoms speak for themselves).

The Effective Path To Controlling Chemical Weapons Is Not War

September 7th, 2013

By Kevin Zeese

President Obama Should Act Within The Rule of Law and Seek Prosecution of Members of the Assad Regime Under the Chemical Weapons Protocol Rather Than Wage an Illegal War

The most effective deterrent against the use of chemical weapons is not the mass bombing of Syria, an action that would be illegal under international law and counterproductive, but to use the international legal system that has been built since World War I and take legal action under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Members of the Security Council should immediately pass a resolution referring the issue of the use of chemical weapons in Syria to the International Criminal Court. This would be an approach working within the framework of the rule of law to enforce the ban on chemical weapons that all members of the Security Council would agree on and would strengthen the international regimen that bans chemical weapons, rather than weaken it.

Israeli Lobby Urges War on Syria

September 7th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

It did so formally. It didn't surprise. It has more than Syria in mind. A previous article explained.

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations wants war. AIPAC is its best known member.

It's a blight on humanity. It's an unregistered foreign agent. It operates illegally. It does so destructively.

It promotes war. It deplores peace. It supports the worst of Israeli crimes. It supports its most unprincipled interests.

It controls US administrations and Congress. Edward Said called it "the most powerful and feared lobby in Washington."

Anti-Syrian Media Bias

September 7th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Journalistic ethics are clear and unequivocal. They're consistently violated. According to the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics:

"....public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy."

"The duty of the journalist is to further those ends by seeking truth and providing a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues."

"Conscientious journalists from all media and specialties strive to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty."

"Professional integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility."

A serious question for Democrats on Syria

September 6th, 2013

Michael Collins
Leaders of the Democratic Party and their media side kicks are giving President Barack Obama a free ride on his proposal to attack Syria. Along with the Republican leadership, they're ignoring the strong opposition to any attack by citizens in both parties and independents.

The president's proposed military strike targets a government that has neither attacked nor threatened to attack us or our allies. Obama did so without any intent to get congressional approval and before any evidence was made public. He and the Secretary of State announced the attack without regard to clear international law which bars the unprovoked attacks on sovereign nations.

We are told, Trust me. I've made the decision.

Does this remind you of anyone? The president is Barack Obama but the words sound just like those of former President George W. Bush before the 2003 Iraq invasion.

Target is Still Iran: Clear Cutting the Middle East and the Coming Blood Bath (Mapping World War III)

September 6th, 2013

via chycho

I. Introduction

One of the main reasons that we are on the brink of one of the greatest global catastrophes ever known to human civilization is because people do not have a clear picture of what is happening in the world.

“The chorus of denunciations of the New Hitlers in Teheran and the threat they pose to survival has been marred by a few voices from the back rooms. Former Mossad Chief Ephraim Halevy recently warned that an Israeli attack on Iran ‘could have an impact on us for the next 100 years.’” - Noam Chomsky, August 6, 2008

To remedy the lack of appreciation of this situation, the following maps are being presented to help in the visualization of what the United States of America is proposing, referred to as a crusade by some, World War III (2):

But even with the help of the Israelis - especially with the help of the Israelis! - we couldn't defeat the Iranians, the 'Arabs', the world of Islam or the whole Third World if it should turn against us. We [the CIA] have reason to believe that Soviet strategists well understand this, and that the Third World War that they envision will be one of ourselves against shapeless forces of the Third World, with Soviet Russia ostensibly aloof from it... in their version of the Third World War the United States would be forced into a variety of situations in which it would feel compelled to play the role of a powerful nation but, for all the world to see on it television sets, it would in fact, be powerless." - Miles Copeland, Jr., “The Game Player: Confessions of the CIA's Original Political Operative”, London: Aurum Press, 1989.
