Shameless NYT Defense of Obamacare

March 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Obamacare is a healthcare rationing scheme. It enriches insurers, drug companies and large hospital chains.

Universal, single-payer coverage alone works. Obama and complicit Democrats spurned it.

They prioritize taxing more, rationing care, placing profits above human need, and forcing ordinary people to bear a greater burden than previously.

What Follows Turkish/Israeli Reconciliation

March 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

A separate article called it grand betrayal. Aggrieved families were denied justice. What's ahead matters most. Be concerned. Be very concerned.

Israel's the region's most powerful military force. It's nuclear armed and dangerous. Turkey has NATO's second largest standing army. Allied they're formidable and menacing. They give America more options. Doing so bodes ill regionally.

New York Times Hypocrisy

March 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

NYT's attempts to set the record straight are duplicitous. They come too late to matter.

On May 26, 2004, Times editors headlined "The Times and Iraq," saying:

"Over the last year this newspaper has shone the bright light of hindsight on decisions that led the United States into Iraq."

"We have examined the failings of American and allied intelligence, especially on the issue of Iraq's weapons and possible Iraqi connections to international terrorists."

Payday Loans: Modern Day Usury

March 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Payday loans let predatory lenders rip off unwary borrowers. They provide short-term unsecured quick cash. It comes at a high price. It matches the worst of loan shark practices.

The Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) calls itself a "non-partisan organization that works to protect homeownership and family wealth by fighting predatory lending practices."

It's "witnessed, studied, and fought against outrageous lending abuses." They "strip billions of dollars from (unwary) American families."

Cyprus Seeks 11th Hour Deal

March 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

When politicians conspire with bankers, ordinary people suffer most. Cypriot crisis conditions continue. One bad plan follows others.

The latest is unprecedented. Cypriot and Eurocrat officials are close to agreement. At issue is levying a one-time 20% tax on Bank of Cyprus deposits over 100,000 euros. Similar amounts in other banks will be assessed 4%.

Cyprus has to raise 5.8 billion euros by Monday. Otherwise emergency ECB funding will end. Eurocrats require it for a 10 billion euro bailout.

Grand Betrayal

March 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Turkey and Israel reconciled. Headlines announced it. They reflect grand betrayal. It's duplicitous. It's too little, too late. More on that below.

Israel bears full responsibility. Officials ordering nine cold-blooded murders remain unaccountable. Corpses won't be reborn. Family survivors aren't assuaged. They deserve better. They were promised justice. They're denied it.

On May 31, 2010, Israeli commandos interdicted Freedom Flotilla vessels. They did so lawlessly. They were in international waters. They tried bringing humanitarian aid to besieged Gazans.

High Noon in Cyprus

March 25th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

The Wall Street Journal said "Cyprus braces for a long weekend." It's not over 'till it's over. What's ahead bodes ill for Cypriots.

Predatory bankers assure it. So do Eurocrats. Corrupt politicians go along. Financial tyranny is policy. All Western societies are affected.

Rumors of Assads Assassination are Greatly Exaggerated

March 24th, 2013

Michael Collins
There's a strange story out there about Syrian President Bashar Assad's assassination and possible death. It has little merit but the sourcing is interesting.

Gateway Pundit reported: BREAKING: Assad Shot By Bodyguard – Hospitalized in Damascus - Posted by Jim Hoft on Sunday, March 24, 2013, 12:22 PM

The sourcing on this leads to a French publication, JSS. Gateway Pundit listed the link as "Translated from JSS News:"

JSS, a French online publication, cites the "Arab Media" as its source on Assad's death. This is when the story falls apart.

President Obama’s Second Term: Selling Death and Buying Assassins In the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia

March 24th, 2013

James Petras
Introduction

As President Obama enters his second term with a new Cabinet, the foreign policy legacy of the past four years weighs heavily on their strategic decisions and their empire-building efforts. Central to the analysis of the next period is an evaluation of the past policies especially in regions where Washington expended its greatest financial and military resources, namely the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa.

We will proceed by examining the accomplishments and failures of the Obama-Clinton regime. We will then turn to the ongoing policy efforts to sustain the empire-building project. We will take account of the constraints and opportunities, which define the parameters resulting from imperial military ambitions, Israeli-Zionist influence in shaping policy and the ongoing anti-imperialist struggles. We will conclude by examining likely polices and outcomes resulting from current strategies.

Obama in Jerusalem

March 24th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Rhetoric doesn't reflect policy. What matters most is what Obama means, not what he says. His agenda affirms one-sided Israeli support. He spurns Palestinian rights. He's done so throughout his tenure.

He's not about to change now. Palestinians have no friends in Washington. For sure they have none in high places.

Obama's their enemy. His words ring hollow. How can a warrior president be taken seriously?
