The ex-pope and the holiness myth

March 3rd, 2013

Mary Shaw

So now Pope Benedict XVI has retired, and the cardinals will be choosing a new leader.

Meanwhile, sentimental Catholics and others have been praising the now-former pontiff. They call him a holy man. However, in looking back through his record, I see much that is downright unholy.

Perhaps most obvious is his role in the cover-up of clergy sex abuse.

Sequester Chicken

March 3rd, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

On March 1, $85 billion in automatic sequestered cuts are scheduled. Congress may or may permit them. Obama calls instituting them dire. On February 19, he said.

"(They) won't help the economy, won't create jobs, will visit hardship on a whole lot of people."

He spent four years benefitting bankers, war profiteers, other corporate favorites, and super-rich elites. He did so at the expense of middle America. Others most disadvantaged suffered more.

Accountability Now

March 2nd, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

State terrorism is official Israeli policy. Torture and cold-blooded murder define it. Arafat Jaradat is Israel's latest victim. He died wracked in pain Saturday.

Israel attributed it to cardiac arrest. Shin Bet claimed no detectable health problems during interrogation. Accusations of torture were dismissed. Coverup and denial don't wash.

Plight of Palestinians in Israeli Prisons

March 2nd, 2013

By Khalid Amayreh
Journalist — Occupied Palestine

Samer Eisawi has been on an intermittent hunger strike for 212 days. (Reuters)

As the agony of hunger-striking Palestinian inmates continues unabated, the Israeli government has surprised observers with a secretly-adopted new set of laws. The laws allow for the re-arrest and indefinite incarceration of Palestinian political and resistance prisoners released in a deal brokered by Egypt nearly a year and a half ago.

The Israeli justice system is widely thought to be a mere rubber stamp in the hands of the powerful security establishment, especially the domestic intelligence agency known as Shin Bet.

The Failure of the Israeli Justice System

Palestinian lawyers and human rights activists have called the Israeli feat "scandalous and immoral." The Palestinian Authority (PA) minister for Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Karakei'a described the disclosed Israeli laws as "an immoral act befitting thieves and gangsters."

IAEA Report Confirms Iran's Peaceful Nuclear Program

March 2nd, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

It's no surprise. It's been that way for years. Iran's legally entitled to enrich uranium. Dozens of other countries do the same thing.

Tehran alone is criticized. Managed news misinformation begets more of it. Washington, Israel, and European partner collaborators repeat it ad nauseam.

Pat Robertson’s “God”, Salafi Muslims and Demon Spirits

March 2nd, 2013

By Ali Baghdadi

On February 25, 2013, Mr. Pat Robertson, a Christian Anglican leader, surprised us with a new heavy weight “revelation”. Responding to an email from a troubled young woman, he told the whole world that bought or donated old sweaters and other clothes and objects could be attached to demon spirits. Those scary unforeseen stubborn “creatures” normally cause people a lot of trouble and suffering. Washing and cleaning these items won’t convince wicked spirits to leave.

Fortunately, a prayer over old things we obtain as secondhand before we bring them home or a donation to Mr. Robertson’s “club” will help get rid of these demons. In the United States of America, the leader of the “civilized” world, there are other preachers who share Mr. Robertson views and convictions. They are men and sometimes women of “god”. They possess unimaginable power. With a touch of their hand, people with untreatable diseases or injuries are immediately “healed”.

Calling Out the Misleaders of the Phony ‘Progressives’ and the Fake U.S. ‘Left’

March 1st, 2013

By Larry Pinkney

“It is both sad and simultaneously horribly fascinating to observe so many euphorically pinning their hopes and dreams on Barack Obama, a chameleon who speaks liberally of ‘change’ but who is, himself, beholden to the very same blood-sucking corporate vampires (including Lockheed and others) who are ravaging the people of America, and the entire planet…Many Black Americans and our Brown and Red sisters and brothers will, I fear, come to be deeply disappointed in Barack Obama, once he demonstrates who he really is. There will be no peace or justice under an Obama presidency. Even the majority of White Americans, with the exception of the corporate liberals and conservatives, may yet come to realize that Obama’s interests are corporate interests; they are not the needs and interests of everyday people, who represent the overwhelming majority of this nation and the world.”

A good cup of coffee to go with your police shootouts and burning cabins, but was it really Dorner who was killed?

February 28th, 2013

by Ruth Hull

Image DescriptionThe morning of 2/12, a big African-American man in Big Bear stole a purple Nissan SUV, owned by Jay of Jay's Tree Trimming Service. (Lt Foy, Fish and Wildlife thought this car belonged to two maids.)  Around 12:45, while following two school buses, the vehicle passed a sheriff's car and a Fish and Wildlife car.  What is interesting is the difference in stories.  Fish and Wildlife Public information officer Andrew Hughan, who was kind enough to draw a diagram of the action, had the suspect driving towards Big Bear, but Sacramento Fish and Wildlife's Lieutenant Patrick Foy had him going down Highway 38 away from Big Bear. After this reporter pointed out the discrepancy they solidified behind Lieutenant Foy's version. According to Public Information Officer Andrew Hughan of the Fish and Wildlife Department, the purple SUV passed the school buses as did the officer's cars.

Image DescriptionPIO Hughan stated that after driving past Glass Road, the officers realized they had lost him and turned back. The SUV crashed and the suspect reportedly commandeered a silvery–white truck owned by  Rick Heltebrake, an onsite ranger for the Boy Scout campground. Reportedly the truck was taken at rifle-point. According to most versions, the suspect drove the truck away from Highway 38 and then turned around.

Meanwhile, two other Fish and Wildlife cars came from the East and turned on Glass Road. According to Officer Hughan and Lieutenant Patrick Foy of the Fish and Wildlife Department in Sacramento, the game warden in the first of the second set F&W cars believed he visually identified Dorner as he passed him in a car.  The second F&W car was fired upon and hit (with about 5 or more rounds).

Washington Whitewashes Israeli Murder

February 28th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

Why not. It whitewashes its own. Washington is a rogue terror state. So is Israel. It denigrates non-Jews. It's waged war on Palestine for decades. It's guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors. Its rap sheet makes serial killers look saintly.

On May 31, 2010, Israeli commandos committed premeditated murder. They killed nine humanitarian activists. They did so in cold blood. They executed them in international waters. Doing so also constituted piracy.

Activists were trying to bring vitally needed aid to besieged Gazans. It included food, medicines, medical supplies, clothing, educational and construction materials, kitchen utensils, mattresses, toys for children, and other items.

Eighteen-year old Turkish-American Furkan Dogan was on board. Israel marked him for death. A UN Human Rights Council (HRC) investigation determined that he and eight other Turkish nationals were murdered in cold blood.

Understanding Israeli Settlements

February 28th, 2013

by Stephen Lendman

They violate international law. They prioritize land theft. They prevent peace. On January 31, the UN International Fact-Finding Mission on Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory condemned them for good reason.

They deny Palestinian self-determination. They comprise "part of an overall pattern of (Israeli) breaches."

They benefit Jews exclusively. They institutionalize racist segregation, inequality, dispossession, and occupation harshness.
