California Attorney General Rob Bonta is calling on shoppers to stay vigilant this holiday season, not just against scams but also regarding compliance with a new state law requiring large retailers to provide gender-neutral sections for children. In a press release published on Nov. 26, Bonta encouraged Californians to report department stores that fail to adhere to Assembly Bill 1084. The law, which was passed in 2021 and took effect in January 2024, mandates that department stores with at least 500 employees across California maintain sections that do not separate items for children by gender. Violators face fines of $250 for a first offense and $500 for subsequent infractions. (Related: Trudeau gov't to make all bathrooms in Parliament buildings GENDER NEUTRAL.)
