Syrian troops are now at the gates of the Islamic State-besieged city of Deir ez-Zor, the governor of the province said, as the government forces continue to press forward, obliterating terrorist positions in the vicinity and on the outskirts of the city. The key Euphrates city of Deir ez-Zor has been under terrorist siege for two and a half years, after being cut off from government-held areas in May 2015 during the jihadists’ offensive on Palmyra. The surrounded city, alongside a neighboring military base and airfield, have since been supplied with food and ammunition via airdrops by Russian and Syrian transport planes and helicopters.
An object appearing to be unexploded ordnance was found at disaster-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant by a worker, according to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc., who reported the find to police.
The site where the Fukushima No. 1 plant is located used to be an airfield for the Japanese military during WWII.

An 5.3 earthquake followed by half a dozen aftershocks have struck Idaho near the state border with Wyoming, some 28 km east of Soda Springs which has a population of roughly 3,000 people, the USGS announced. Idaho is rarely associated with earthquakes, due to the state’s close proximity to the supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park, seismic activity is possible in the area. Salt Lake City, Utah is located 214.5km (133.3 mi) from the epicenter of the quake.

North Korea successfully tested a hydrogen bomb on Sunday according to officials in the country. If confirmed, it would be the most powerful nuclear explosion ever achieved by the isolated country. The explosion of North Korea’s hydrogen bomb was first picked up as an earthquake at exactly noon, local time. Measuring 6.3 on the richter scale by the US Geological Survey, such an explosion is at least 5 times stronger than any previous detonation performed by the country and roughly 8 times stronger than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima during World War II.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has warned that any attack on the United States or its allies will be met with a "massive military response," and said that while the US was not “looking for the total annihilation” of North Korea, it had “many options to do so.”
“We have the ability to defend ourselves and our allies South Korea and Japan from attack, and our commitments to our allies are ironclad,” Mattis said in a statement he read out to journalists outside the White House.
“Any threat to the United States or its territories, including Guam or our allies, will be met with a massive military response – a response both effective and overwhelming.

Repeated threats made by the US and directed against North Korea have only worsened the crisis on the Korean Peninsula, as they prompt Pyongyang to further develop its weapons, whistleblower Julian Assange said.

A ferocious bushfire near Los Angeles has spread across thousands of acres, prompting the mandatory evacuations of hundreds of homes in Burbank, California.

The highly anticipated asteroid ‘3122 Florence,’ measuring a whopping 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) in width, came within 4.4 million miles (7 million km) of Earth. The gap is the equivalent of 18 times the distance from our planet to the moon. “Florence is the largest asteroid to pass by our planet this close since the NASA program to detect and track near-Earth asteroids began,” Paul Chodas, of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said of the fly-by.

The botmaker and garment company estimate the factory will stitch about 23 million T-shirts a year. Beijing has said it will not allow war or chaos on the Korean Peninsula, as two US B-1B bombers conducted a new flight in the area, joined by South Korean and Japanese fighter jets in a show of force amid mounting tensions. Six American warplanes - two nuclear-capable B-1B strategic bombers and four Marine Corps F-35Bs - held a joint flight operation with Japanese F-15 fighter jets on Thursday, Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) said in a statement. The squadron flew near the island of Kyushu, south of the Korean Peninsula.

Iran Khodro (IKCO) expects to finalize a deal with Nissan Motor Co for production of low-budget Datsun cars, the largest Iranian automaker’s CEO Hashem Yekezare says. Nissan said it would send so-called knockdown kits, to be assembled locally, rather than finished autos to Iran and that the automaker was looking to export kits for several thousand vehicles a year. Iranian automaker targeting Datsun cars in the price range of $11,500. Datsun is a resurrected brand targeting emerging markets. Nissan quit using the Datsun brand in 1981; revived the nameplate in 2013 for increasing sales to Indonesia, India and Russia.
