Wheat prices surged to a new record high on Monday after India decided to prohibit exports of the commodity as a heatwave hit production. The price climbed to €435 ($453) per ton as the European market opened. Soft red winter wheat for July delivery rose 4.2%. New Delhi said this weekend it was curbing exports as the country, the world’s second-largest wheat producer, saw its hottest March on record. Authorities expressed worries about food security of the nation’s own 1.4 billion people amid lower production and sharply higher global prices. Export deals agreed before the directive issued on May 13 could still be honored but future shipments will need government approval, New Delhi said.

Barbara Ryan, 57, paid off her $650,000 home in South Charlotte and paid the state their share so they wouldn’t steal her home. But thanks to an “error” in the Mecklenburg County accounting system, armed agents of the state showed up to her home and threw this paraplegic, legally blind woman out on the street. Deputies refused to allow her to grab clothes, a phone, money, credit cards, and shoes before kicking her out — she had nothing. She would roll herself into an elevator in a parking garage to sleep for nearly two weeks as she tried every day to talk to someone to fix this mess. She couldn’t go back home because the couple who bought the house from the county had already moved in. .Two different courts have since ruled that Ryan paid what the county said she owed days before her house went on the auction block , a payment that, under North Carolina law, should have kept the house in her hands. .Ryan is now renting a place and saving money to pay legal fees totaling well into six figures so she can sue the county for restitution knowing that all of her possessions, including her parents’ ashes will never be returned.

Texas' electricity grid operator asked customers Friday to conserve power this weekend after half a dozen generation plants were knocked offline amid another round of unseasonably hot weather. Friday afternoon, six power generation facilities tripped offline, resulting in the loss of approximately 2,900 MW of electricity; enough to power about 580,000 hoes. A heatwave would send electricity demand to record levels. With 2,900 MW of electricity removed from the grid as energy demand increases, this could strain the state's power system.
In August of 2021, roughly 18.9 percent of COVID-19 deaths happened among vaccinated individuals. Six months later in February 2022, that figure had risen to over 40 percent as the highly-transmissible Omicron variant made its way across the globe. Some experts believe the increase in deaths among fully vaccinated people or “breakthrough infections” in those who have received all their shots is not overly concerning, saying it is because while more people become fully vaccinated, new variants emerge and vaccine protection begins to wane as fewer people continue to get booster shots.
