A large-scale study on neonicotinoid pesticides is adding to the growing body of evidence that these agricultural chemicals are indeed harming bee populations. Carried out at 33 sites in the United Kingdom, Germany and Hungary, the study found that exposure to neonicotinoids “left honeybee hives less likely to survive over winter, while bumblebees and solitary bees produced fewer queens.” Bayer and Syngenta, makers of “neonic” pesticides who stand to reap massive profits if Europe lifts the neonic ban, promptly disputed the researchers’ conclusions—even though they partially funded the study.

A U.S. judge on Friday dealt a major financial blow to Illinois by ordering the cash-strapped state to pay $586 million a month to Medicaid providers to ensure continued medical care for poor and disabled residents.The order by Judge Joan Lefkow also stipulated that Illinois send $2 billion to Medicaid providers during the fiscal year that starts on Saturday to pay down the existing $3.1 billion backlog of unpaid bills. Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, whose office pays the state's bills, said the ruling "takes the state’s finances from horrific to catastrophic" and called on state lawmakers to immediately pass a budget.

A man was arrested after attempting to drive a car into people in front of a mosque in the Paris suburb of Creteil, police said in a statement. No one was injured in the incident, and the suspect was detained. The man did not succeed in driving his 4x4 vehicle into the crowd due to barriers erected in front of the mosque, according to police. The motives of the suspect remain unclear so far.
Israeli attacks recorded in at least three locations in Gaza, Palestinian security sources and witnesses said, with Hamas bases struck near the southern city of Rafah and Gaza City, as well as an empty area in the center of Gaza, Al Jazeera reported.The interior ministry in Gaza said in a statement the attack from Israel caused damage but it did not provide specifics. Ashraf al-Qidra, Palestinian health ministry spokesman, said no causalities were recorded as a result of the attacks. Israel claims the attacks were launched in response to rocket fire from the Gaza Strip which landed in an unpopulated area in the occupied territories without causing any injuries. The Israeli military frequently bombs the Gaza Strip, with civilians being the main target of such attacks.

Brazil’s Federal police have arrested at least 8 men following a spectacular multi-million dollar heist in Paraguay which was carried out with military precision, leaving one officer and three attackers dead. During the heist, the group blocked access to the local police headquarters with flaming vehicles, set up sniper positions on rooftops and used explosives and tyre spikes throughout the raid.

50 armed assailants laid siege to a police headquarters in Paraguay on Monday while stealing up to $40 million from a security firm.The gang, believed by police to include members of Brazilian drug gang First Capital Command, targeted headquarters of Prosegur, a security company specialising in transportation of cash in Paraguayan city of Ciudad del Este. An explosive blew open the front of the facility, killing one policeman who was on guard.The gang then seized contents of the firm’s vault, described by public prosecutor Denise Duarte as being full at the time. Police said the vault can hold $40 million. Police were prevented from responding when the gang stopped them exiting their headquarters with 19 cars, explosives, and a rocket launcher, engaging in a battle that left the security firm premises without help for two hours.

A chocolate factory in Tasmania, Australia has become the first in the Southern Hemisphere to suffer from the ongoing ransomware attack that has already compromised computer systems around the globe. As a result, the factory has halted production. The Cadbury chocolate factory located in the city of Claremont became one of the latest additions to the list of the victims claimed by ‘Petya,’ a ransomware similar to its notorious predecessor, WannaCry. Computers at the factory, which makes about 50,000 tonnes of chocolate a year, mostly for sale in Australia, went out of operation 9.30pm local time on Tuesday, and started to display a message from hackers with instructions on how to “purchase the decryption key.”

Venezuela's Supreme Court has been attacked by grenades dropped from a helicopter in what President Nicolás Maduro called a "terrorist attack". Footage on social media shows a police helicopter circling over the city before shots and a loud bang are heard. The police officer said to have piloted the stolen aircraft issued a statement denouncing the "criminal government". His whereabouts are unknown. It comes after mass protests against the political and economic crisis. Mr Maduro has placed the military on alert."I have activated the entire armed forces to defend the peace," he said. "Sooner or later, we are going to capture that helicopter and those who carried out this terror attack."
