The Trump administration is quickly identifying ways to assemble the nationwide deportation force that President Trump promised on the campaign trail as he railed against the dangers posed by illegal immigration. Department of Homeland Security assessment obtained by The Washington Post shows the agency has found 33,000 more detention beds to house undocumented immigrants, opened discussions with dozens of local police forces that could be empowered with enforcement authority and identified where construction of Trump’s border wall could begin.The agency also is considering ways to speed up the hiring of hundreds of new Customs and Border Patrol officers.

A migrant convicted of attempting to rape a woman was awarded £27,000 ($33,600) compensation by the High Court after the Home Office held him in detention for nearly a year. Kurdish citizen Bashdar Abdulla Qarani entered the UK in 2005, and was found guilty of a series of offences, including theft, battery, and carrying a knife in the following years, sentenced to four years in prison for a sexual offence, which qualified him for automatic deportation once released. He was freed in 2015, but taken to a deportation facility straight after. High Court judge Philip Mott QC ruled Qarani’s lengthy detention was in breach of his human rights and granted the man £27,000 in compensation.

Tensions between Russia and the U.S. are again flaring up in the Middle East, but this time it’s not about Syria or chemical weapons. Instead, the conflict is over a potential peace deal in Afghanistan that could bring an end to 16 years of war that has ravaged the country. The Kremlin is slated to hold a meeting Friday in Moscow aimed at brokering a resolution between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Washington has refused to attend, instead accusing Russia of arming Taliban fighters. Afghanistan is considered strategically important, particularly in relation to economic and national security concerns in nearby India, Pakistan and Iran. Afghanistan has also claimed its mineral resources are worth around $3 trillion.
