Bill Markham asks Chief Wanady, "Why did you take my son?" Wanady answers, "One day I was hunting at the edge of the world, when Tommy came and smiled at me. The light of the forest was in his eyes." Chief Wanady looks over at Tommy and says, "Even though you were a Termite child I did not have the heart to send you back to the Dead World." refiring to the civilized world as, "the Dead World." "Father..." Tommy asks chief Wanady, "Why are they called the Termite People?" Wanaby answers, "They come into the world and chew down all the grandfather trees just like Termites."
The so-called civilized world is considered to be, "the dead world" by those who live apart from it in the Amazon forests. Civilized man has killed most animal species, is killing all life, and killing the planet with his technology. Compared to the living breathing forests of the Amazon our civilized world is nearly devoid of life.
