Al-Khalil, West Bank:
The Palestinian Authority (PA) security apparatus on Monday arrested Palestinian journalist Awadh Rajoub.
Rajoub, a correspondent of al-Jazeera.net in occupied Palestine, was summoned by telephone to the offices of the PA "military intelligence" in Hebron where he was arrested.
PA officials refused to say why Rajoub was arrested. However it is widely believed that the arrest was in connection with a report he wrote on the assassination by Israeli troops last week of Abdul Majid Dudeen, a prominent resistance fighter affiliated with Hamas military wing, the Izzedin al Qassam Brigades.
Rajoub spent over a month in a PA lockup in Hebron last year during which he was reportedly mistreated.
Rajoub, 35, is a cousin of Jebril Rajoub, the former chief of the Preventive Security Force.
A number of Palestinian journalists have been arrested by PA security agencies lately. The arrests are believed to be intended to make journalists exercise self-censorship and refrain from criticizing the PA leadership.
Observers say human rights and civil liberties, including press freedom; have retreated in the West Bank ever since rift between Hamas and Fatah nearly three years ago.
