Welcome to the New Syria

July 23rd, 2012

By Michael Collins

The assault on Damascus by Syrian rebels and terrorist murder of the Syrian Defense Minister occurred just as the Red Cross announced that the fighting in Syria was officially a civil war. This is an odd reward system for military action by the Free Syria Army. Commit enough acts of violence and you're rewarded with special protections that apply in times of war. (Image)

The rebel Free Syria Army attacks cities and villages, disrupts the Syrian economy, and is in the business of suicide bombing. It has the material and diplomatic support of Saudi Arabia and the other oil oligarchies plus the big guns in NATO. So-called Syrian experts supporting the carnage are amply funded by United States sponsored nongovernment organizations.

Rebel cheerleader Hillary Clinton spans the globe to "build pressure against the Syrian regime," to "end" it, her exact words. She seeks punishment for who disagree, China and Russia.

It's hard to tell how the latest regime change project will come out. The real Syrian Army seems to win every engagement. China and Russia support the Assad government. At the same time, despite strong public opposition to any intervention, the Obama government is pushing hard to force Assad out of power. NATO and the Saudis seem unwavering.

Let's take a look at what the New Syria will look like if United States government, the Saudis, and others prevail.

Widespread torture is just around the corner. It wasn't long before the liberated Libya became the latest venue for torture as a means of settling old scores. The winners not only rewrite history, they get to set the rules. In Misrata, torturers were using foreign medical assistance to revive exhausted torture subjects thus allowing more torture.

Revenge killings by the thousands. Thirty thousand citizens of Tawergha, black Libyans, were removed from their town and imprisoned. Some have been murdered. Why? They opposed the anti-Gaddafi movement. They're not the only ones.

Goodbye infrastructure. Welcome to your new home. It's gone. Just take a look at Libya. NATO air strikes even destroyed a massive water supply project vital to Libya's future.

Living standards plunge. Before the revolution, Libyans received subsidies for getting married and buying a house. They had free medical care and low priced commodities. All of that assistance is over as the chaos of governance in Libya continues.

Election fraud arrives with the "new democracy." There was a huge drop off in voter turnout for Egypt's presidential elections. Only about 15% of eligible voters cast a ballot. The two leading candidates during the campaign were removed from the ballot before the election. The last place candidate in pre-election polling won, running against one other candidate.

Forget about unions. The Tahrir Square protests in Egypt that toppled Mubarak were, at the core, a movement of Egypt's unofficial unions. Mubarak is gone but nothing much changed for the unofficial unions.

When the western powers and their pals, the oil oligarchs, target your country, it's time to run just as fast as you can. Death, destruction, humiliation, and chronic instability are the norm. Fixed elections make your political choices irrelevant. You may well be broke. Organize to achieve your rights as a worker and you'll find that you do have one inalienable right -- to work indefinitely for low wages.

Most importantly, if you stick around, you will experience a rapid de-evolution from the hope for peace, dignity, and an improved life to the realities of the new barbarism brought to you by brand democracy.
