Barack Obama's number-one friend in the Muslim world, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who harbors plans to be the Sultan of a revived Ottoman Empire, has gone on record to reveal his other intent, which is to be a new Hitler. Following his return from Saudi Arabia, on Jan. 1, according to a recorded broadcast by the Dogan news agency, Erdogan told reporters that it is possible to transform the Turkish presidency from a ceremonial office to the role of chief executive: "That could work without disrupting Turkey's unitary political structure. There are already examples in the world. You can see it when you look at Hitler's Germany. There are later examples in various other countries," Erdogan said. On Jan. 3, two days after citing Hitler's Germany as a model for Turkey's future presidential system, Erdogan took his point further, saying Turkey needs a country like Israel.
"Israel needs a country like Turkey in this region. We, too, should admit that we need a country like Israel," Erdogan told journalists. Meanwhile, Turkey's daily {Hurriyet} has reported wide-ranging clashes between the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and the Turkish military. {Hurriyet} cited the Turkish Chief of General Staff announcing on Jan. 2 that a total of 261 militants of the PKK have been killed in ongoing operations in three southeastern districts under curfew. For much of December, the Turkish army has besieged the major towns and cities of southeastern Turkey, using "collective punishment" tactics against the Kurdish population there
In Diyarbakir, the de facto capital of Turkey's Kurdish population, a 10-day curfew was imposed, and the city center came under heavy attack attack by the army. In the last week of the year, Çizre, population over 100,000, was encircled by tanks which fired into the city center for days.
In an interview with RT published today, Ronald Suny, a professor of history at the University of Michigan, suggested that Ankara is waging an open war against the Kurds, which could lead to Turkey's destabilization. "In fact there's a kind of open war, in cities such as Çizre, and in some parts of Diyarbakir, against the Kurdish population. These areas are surrounded by tanks. There are reports of snipers on the rooftops, who fire on civilians if they go out after curfew."
