U.S. & Russia Reaffirm Commitment to U.N. Peace Process in Syria, Despite Obama’s Opposition

May 13th, 2016

Eric Zuesse

On May 9th, the U.S. and Russia issued a "Joint Statement of the Russian Federation and the United States on Syria”, saying that, "The Russian Federation and United States are determined to redouble efforts to reach a political settlement of the Syrian conflict consistent with UNSCR 2254.”

UNSCR 2254, from the U.N. Security Council, on 18 December 2015, refers several times to, and endorses, “a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition in order to end the conflict in Syria,” and, in one passage, it “stresses that the Syrian people will decide the future of Syria." It goes on, to state that the Security Counci:l Expresses its support, in this regard, for a Syrian-led political process that is facilitated by the United Nations and, within a target of six months, establishes credible, inclusive and non-sectarian governance and sets a schedule and process for drafting a new constitution, and further expresses its support for free and fair elections, pursuant to the new constitution, to be held within 18 months and administered under supervision of the United Nations, to the satisfaction of the governance and to the highest international standards of transparency and accountability, with all Syrians, including members of the diaspora, eligible to participate.

Neoliberal Coup Attempt in Brazil Hits Speed Bump

May 12th, 2016

Stephen Lendman

US-manipulated dark forces want democratically elected Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff ousted, fascist leadership replacing her.

The scheme has nothing to do with corruption or other alleged wrongdoing - everything to do with manipulative power-grabbing, similar to what’s ongoing in Venezuela, fascists wanting social democracies eliminated.

Brazil’s lower house April vote to impeach Rousseff is in question after interim speaker Waldir Maranhao invalidated it because of procedural irregularities, saying lawmakers announcing their intentions ahead of voting constitutes “a clear offense to the wide right to defense that is consecrated in the constitution.”

France Imposes Widely Despised Anti-Labor Bill by Decree

May 12th, 2016

Stephen Lendman

On top of punishing austerity, new rules imposed benefit business exclusively at the expense of worker rights.

They govern layoffs, cap damages for unfair dismissals, and increase the 35-hour workweek at the discretion of employers with minimal pay for overtime.

Since early March, students, other youths and workers rallied against labor law changes proposed by Labor Minister Myriam El Khomri.

President Francois Hollande talks like a leftist, governs like a fascist, entirely beholden to monied interests.

Facing rebellion in his ruling party ranks, he and Prime Minister Manuel Valls rammed through labor law changes by decree - using controversial Constitution Article 49.9 to bypass a parliamentary vote.

Seymour Hersh Says He Doesn’t Know Whether Hillary Clinton Knew About the Sarin

May 12th, 2016

Eric Zuesse

I spoke by phone with Seymour Hersh on May 9th to ask him whether he would say publicly, that Hillary Clinton knew that her testimony which was given under oath to Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo on 22 October 2015 was false:

Pompeo: Were you aware or are you aware of any U.S. efforts by the U.S. government in Libya to provide any weapons, directly or indirectly, or through a cutout, to any Syrian rebels or militias or opposition to Syrian forces? Clinton: No. Pompeo: Were you aware or are you aware of any efforts by the U.S. government in Libya to facilitate or support the provision of weapons to any opposition of Gadhafi’s forces, Libyan rebels or militias through a third party or country? Clinton: No.

Hersh said he wouldn’t, because he doesn’t know whether she knew.

Hitler the Ultra Zionist

May 12th, 2016

Gilad Atzmon

In a bizarre effort to paper over the historical truth regarding Hitler and the Haavara Agreement, Professor Rainer Schulze of Essex University wrote an article totally lacking intellectual integrity. Schulze’s piece in the Independent, ‘Hitler and Zionism: Why the Haavara Agreement does not mean the Nazis were Zionists’, demonstrates that fear of Zionists and their extensive power extends beyond the Labour party. It is deeply entrenched within the British psyche and institutionally embedded in academia. Schulze article leads him to the conclusion that: “any claim that Nazis and Zionists ever shared a common goal is not only cynical and disingenuous, but a distortion of clearly established historical fact.” The German/British professor’s failure to apply elementary academic analytical skills to the issue results in faulty scholarship.

Israel Indicts Vanunu

May 11th, 2016

Stephen Lendman

Israel finds ways of giving the term rogue state new meaning - former nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu a victim of its viciousness.

He’s a heroic whistleblower - 30 years ago revealing Israel was and remains nuclear armed and dangerous.

He was kidnapped, beaten, drugged, secretly tried, and politically imprisoned for 18 years, mostly in harsh solitary confinement - for revealing what everyone has a right to know. Since release in 2004, he’s been constantly hounded and monitored, imprisoned without confinement, his fundamental freedoms denied, reimprisoned several times, virtually certain again after his latest indictment.

US-Supported Terrorist Atrocities in Syria

May 11th, 2016

Stephen Lendman

They’re committed daily in various parts of Syria, especially in northern areas near Turkey’s border and suburban Damascus.

Scoundrel media headlines scream Russian and Syrian airstrikes continuing during (fantasy) cessation of hostilities and (farcical) peace talks - on life support, breathing hard, effectively dead.

The London-based, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, publishes regular pro-Western press releases, one-sided conflict reports.

It claimed daily Russian and government bombardment of Aleppo since April 22 killed 250 mostly civilians, ended ceasefire and caused peace talks to collapse.

Terrorists Washington and its rogue allies call “moderate rebels” are entirely responsible for civilian deaths, targeting residential areas and other nonmilitary sites, murdering noncombatant men, women and children in cold blood, at times with chemical and other banned weapons.

America Talks Peace While Waging Endless Wars

May 10th, 2016

Stephen Lendman

Wars serve America’s imperial agenda. Peace and stability defeat it.

As long as neocons infesting Washington wants unchallenged global dominance, endless conflicts will continue - heading for a showdown with Russia and China, the unthinkable possibility of devastating nuclear war, assuring losers, not winners.

Washington uses ISIS and other terrorist groups it created to advance its imperium, a hugely dangerous phenomenon, US-sponsored death squads likely to show up anywhere.

Millions of extremists worldwide make willing recruits, for whatever benefits they believe makes it worth risking their lives. Addressing Security Council members on Friday on unstable, chaotic conditions in Iraq, Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin sounded the alarm, saying ISIS (and by implication similar groups) are “uncontrollably expanding…into Libya, Afghanistan and Europe.”

He stopped short of explaining America uses these groups as imperial foot soldiers. Millions of potential recruits are available worldwide.

Russia Commemorates Victory Day

May 10th, 2016

Stephen Lendman

May 9 marks the 71st anniversary of what Russians call the Great Patriotic War - representing victory over Nazi Germany.

Commemorations honor millions of Russians killed defending the Motherland. Throughout the war, Soviet Russia, not America, was the indispensable nation.

Without its enormous contribution and sacrifices, Hitler might have won WW II. Reinvented Western history can’t change cold, hard, facts.

Victory Day is sacred in Russia, symbolizing heroism and unity against the scourge of fascism - defeated in WW II, resurgent today, headquartered in Washington with worldwide branch offices in London, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Riyadh, Ankara, Tel Aviv and elsewhere.

On Monday, thousands from all branches of Russia’s military marched through Red Square in downtown Moscow. State-of-the-art military hardware was displayed, including aircraft involved in Russia’s war on terrorism in Syria.

US Spurns Putin’s Call for Unity Against Global Terrorism

May 10th, 2016

Stephen Lendman

Russia urges world unity to defeat the scourge of terrorism. America created and supports it, a pretext for endless imperial wars, wanting whole continents carved up for profit and dominance.

ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra, Al Qaeda and likeminded groups are used as US foot soldiers. Washington backs the scourge it claims to oppose.

It can’t exist without nation-state support. America, NATO, Israel and their rogue allies provide plenty. Obama’s vow to defeat it is a complete hoax, willful deception, media scoundrels complicit in the scam, proliferating state-sponsored propaganda, suppressing what’s most important to report.
