Scotland's Referendum: Fair or Foul?

September 21st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Critics claim fraud at the polls. Suspicions are rife. More on this below.

Rigged elections aren't new. In America, they go back to the beginning of the republic.

Seventeenth century US politicians believed vote rigging was a necessary evil. They assumed opposition parties played dirty. Their strategy was fight fire with fire.

New York's Tammany Hall machine was notorious. It controlled Democrat party nominations for over a century.

It bought off politicians, judges and ward captains. Vote suppression was standard practice.

Russia's Leader Putin Rejects Ukrainian Separatists' Aim to Become Part of Russia

September 20th, 2014

Eric Zuesse

The leader of the Ukrainian separatists says that their efforts to get Russia's President Vladimir Putin to accept their territory as being a part of Russia have been firmly rejected by Putin's Government; and, so, "We will build our own country." (This important statement from the rebel leader Andrei Purgin on Wednesday, September 17th, was inconspicuously buried halfway through an AP news story that focused instead on "East Ukraine Casualties." It's common for propagandistic news reports, such as characterize the U.S. media, to bury what's important in the news story, and not even to headline that crucial information, when that information violates the regime's propaganda. So: this information was buried, and was not headlined.)

Donors will fail Gaza again

September 20th, 2014

By Nicola Nasser

On 12 October, Cairo is due to host a conference, sponsored and chaired by Egypt and Norway, of international and Arab donors for the reconstruction of Gaza. This is their ostensible aim. But the reasons that the donors cited for not fulfilling earlier pledges, made in Paris in 2007 and Sharm El-Sheikh in 2009, still exist. This means that the donors who attend the upcoming Cairo conference will probably make the same pledges they made at the two previous conferences and then once again fail to fulfil them.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian people under blockade in Gaza will remain in suspense, waiting for the next aggression to be unleashed on them by the Israeli occupation, purportedly in order to eliminate the causes that the donors cite for recycling their pledges for the reconstruction of Gaza that is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.

Fulfilment of the donors’ old/new pledges is still contingent politically on the imposition of the status quo in the West Bank on Gaza. This entails security coordination with the occupying power, the pursuit and elimination of all forms of resistance to the occupation, rendering all reconstruction activities subject to the approval of the Israeli security regime, and much more.

Israel's Hannibal Directive

September 20th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It's been Israeli policy since 1986. It's an unwritten military protocol. It was secret for many years.

In 2003, Haaretz called it "one of the most controversial operational orders" in IDF history. Three Northern Command senior officers established it.

They included NC head Major General Yossi Peled, operations officer Col. Gabi Ashkenazi and intelligence officer Col. Yaakov Amidror.

They established live fire rules in cases of Israeli soldier abductions. It said: "During an abduction, the major mission is to rescue our soldiers from the abductors even at the price of harming or wounding our soldiers."

"Light-arms fire is to be used in order to bring the abductors to the ground or to stop them."

"If the vehicle or the abductors do not stop, single-shot (sniper) fire should be aimed at them, deliberately, in order to hit the abductors, even if this means hitting our soldiers."

Ukrainian President Poroshenko in Washington

September 20th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

A previous article discussed his three-day North American tour. His illegitimacy doesn't matter.

Nor his hardline anti-democratic fascist ideology, lawlessness or war without mercy against Ukrainian citizens.

He was treated like visiting royalty. Obama warmly greeted him at the White House. In late August, press secretary Josh Earnest issued a statement saying:

"President Obama will host President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine at the White House on Thursday, September 18." "The visit will highlight the United States' firm commitment to stand with Ukraine as it pursues democracy, independence, and stability."

ISIS, Scotland and The Politics of Mimicry

September 19th, 2014

By Gilad Atzmon

Is the fact that half of the Scots want to split from Britain and the news that hundreds of young Muslim Brits are fighting with Jihadi militant groups in Syria connected?

Of course they are. These two social phenomena are intrinsically linked, yet in the intellectual desert in which we live, no one dares to address the subject. The boundaries of our curiosity are limited by our deference to political correctness and Zionist sensitivities.

From a political perspective, Jihadi enthusiasm amongst young Western Muslims is an outcome of the emergence of tribalism in the West; but isn’t the call for Scottish independence driven by a similar tribal urge? From both a philosophical and dialectic perspective, Jihadi identification and the Scottish call for independence are the antithesis of the New Left and its corrosive Identity (ID) politics that have been spread in our midst for too long.

Anti-Assad Extremists and Obama Plan Coordinated Attacks on Syria

September 19th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Wendy Sherman is Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. On September 16, she spoke at Georgetown University.

She claimed Washington "cares about the Middle East because of (its) economic, political, and security interests…"

"Its rich spiritual and ethnic traditions…" It's Israel's home and America's Gulf partners.

It's "where values we cherish are under intense strain." Washington "is alarmed and moved to act by the upheaval" roiling the region.

America "must show the way."

Ukraine's President in Ottawa and Washington

September 19th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Petro Poroshenko is Washington's man. He has no legitimacy whatever.

He replaced ousted democratically elected President Victor Yanukovych. He represents putschist power.

He's an oligarch billionaire. He made his money the old-fashioned way.

He's anti-democratic, fascist, lawless, neoliberal, confrontational and belligerent.

He waged war without mercy on his own people. He murdered them in cold blood. He ravaged their Southeastern communities.

He caused unspeakable human misery. He knows who's boss. He obeys marching orders from Washington.

Obama calls Ukraine's fascist government "democratic." John Kerry called Poroshenko's election "historic."

War Winds Near Gale Force

September 19th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Candidate Obama promised peace in our time. He pledged to "bring America's longest war to a responsible end." He lied saying:

"I will promise you this, that if we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am president, it is the first thing I will do."

"I will get our troops home. We will bring an end to this war. You can take that to the bank."

Fighting continues. It rages out-of-control. Washington plans permanent occupation. Withdrawal is more fiction than fact.

Thousands of US troops will remain. They'll do so indefinitely. It's just a question of how many.

Obama ravaged Libya. Syria is his war. So is Iraq war III.

Permanent war is official US policy. Obama is the latest in a long line of US warrior presidents. He's a war criminal multiple times over.

Israel's Ruthless Agenda

September 19th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

State terrorism is official policy. So is institutionalized racism, persecution, apartheid worse than South Africa's, and colonization.

Israel's occupation is lawless. It's the longest by far in modern times. Military orders control virtually all aspects of Palestinians' lives.

They have no rights whatever. They're not wanted. They're considered subhuman.

Efforts are made to eliminate them. Israel seeks total Judaization.

Its wars are cold, calculated premeditated aggression. They're high crimes against peace. They're slow-motion genocide. Palestinian self-defense is called "terrorism."
