Creating a World Culture that is Nonviolent

October 2nd, 2014

Robert J. Burrowes

As we celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's birthday on 2 October, the International Day of Nonviolence, we have the chance to reflect on our progress in creating a nonviolent world. Obviously, creating a nonviolent world has many facets and is a long-term work-in-progress. But if we are to regenerate human society in accord with principles of love, nonviolence, justice, equity and sustainability, it is emphatically clear that we need to dramatically recreate much of our culture, particularly in the West, where hatred, violence and injustice are 'built-in'. How can we do this?

According to Gandhi: 'If we are to reach real peace in the world, we shall have to begin with the children.' So, as we reflect, I would like to encourage people to consider and, hopefully, adopt Gandhi’s suggestion before it is too late. And here is why.

What is the Real Truth?

October 1st, 2014

By Tim Gatto

I went to sleep at 1AM after catching up on two episodes of "Boardwalk Empire". I started to drift off to sleep and I went through some of the things that have been crawling through my mind for the last few days. One of the things I decided was that I will definitely boycott the Federal elections in November. I'll vote in the local elections and the Statewide elections, but Congress critters and Senators are out of the question. Why you may ask? The reason being is that there is just nobody I would like to vote for, and the reason for that is because there isn't much difference between Democrats and Republicans. Sure, there are "cosmetic" differences", gay marriage, women's rights, gun control and voter suppression, but in the long run, neither party does anything about those issues.

Why do Good People Become Silent About the Documentable Facts That Disprove the Official White House Conspiracy Theory About 9/11? – Part THREE

October 1st, 2014

By Gary G. Kohls, MD

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

“It also gives us a very special, secret pleasure to see how unaware the people around us are of what is really happening to them.”-- Adolf Hitler

“What good fortune for those in power that the people do not think.”-- Adolf Hitler

With The People’s Climate March Behind Us, What Do We Do Now?

October 1st, 2014

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers

The climate action weekend built around the People’s Climate March proved that the climate movement has broad popular support and millions are ready to mobilize. These are two ingredients necessary to achieve climate justice. Also needed is a strategy that is widely understood so people recognize their work is connected to a larger movement and their actions are more effective.

Governments are sold out to big corporate interests who profit from dirty energy and false market-based climate change ‘solutions.’ Climate justice advocates must stop the government from doing more damage while creating new systems that allow us to stop participating in the dirty energy economy. A great power of social justice movements is noncompliance, but to not comply we need to be able to live in ways that are consistent with climate justice.

Holder Resigns

October 1st, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

He's leaving. His nightmarish reign ends. He won't be missed. He'll be remembered as one of America's most lawless attorneys general.

He waged war on fundamental civil liberties. Francis Boyle called him "a total disaster for the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, Human Rights and the Rule of Law."

He expects his successor to be worse. Rogue states operate this way. Obama presides over a homeland police state apparatus.

He governs lawlessly. Expect another partner in crime to be nominated. Expect no letup in core rule of law principles violations.

Or war wagrd on fundamental freedoms. They're disappearing in plain sight. They're targeted for elimination altogether. Perhaps they'll die before Obama's tenure ends.

Who Owns the Nukes if Wall Street Owns the Government? Maybe it’s Time to Take Back the Government

September 30th, 2014

By Nicholas C. Arguimbau

Paul Craig Roberts is not a fool. Nor is he a card-carrying Communist. His conservative credentials at least once were impeccable - a senior researcher at the Hoover Institute, Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal, one of the economists responsible for President Reagan’s supply-side economics, and Reagan’s Assistant Treasury Secretary for economic policy, working for development of the tax policies that were central to everything that followed in the US http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/pages/about-paul-craig-roberts/.

Consumption Civilization: Our Prospects Since Western Civilization's Historical Adaptation

September 30th, 2014

by Jan Lundberg

For whatever its accomplishments and intricacies, Western Civilization has been based on (1) the exploitation of people and the environment, and (2) the attempt of constant expansion -- geographically, quantitatively, and in the mind.

This expression has had such a long run that it has comprised all conventional history. All the while, civilization as top-down exploitation and expansion has been ratcheting up spectacularly, especially in recent decades, despite -- and partly because of -- fast-shrinking resource limits. Climate instability is barely beginning to act as a brake.

The relatively slow process of civilization's march via exploitation and expansion has finally graduated and adapted to something unanticipated little over a century ago: mass consumption.

Abetted by frantic corporate competition, governmental accommodation, and just-in-time distribution advances, mass consumption has become the dominant feature of Western Civilization. Globalized culture has rapidly changed accordingly. If seen from the outside, consumption has been a frenzy and an end in itself.

America: Humanity's Greatest Threat

September 30th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It bears repeating what other articles stressed. No nation in world history caused more harm to more people over a longer duration than America.

None more give rogue state governance new meaning. None wage more wars. None more affirm them as official policy.

Permanent ones. Aggressive ones. Lawless ones. Preemptive ones against invented enemies posing America no harm.

No nation more recklessly threatens world peace. None more egregiously breach fundamental rule of law principles.

None are more ruthless. More reckless. More malicious. More merciless. More brutal. More barbarous. More sanctimonious.

Obama Targets Free Expression

September 30th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Speech, press and academic freedoms are fundamental. They're our most precious rights. Without them all others are endangered.

Candidate Obama pledged "change you can believe in." He promised hope. He did Lincoln one better. He fooled most people enough times to matter.

"Yes we can" conceals his dark side duplicity. He made America look like Guatemala. He transformed NSA into America's Stasi.

He promised transparency, accountability, and reform. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

He called it "the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse." He said whistleblowing reflects "acts of courage and patriotism."

"Often the best source of information about (government wrongdoing) is an existing employee committed to public integrity willing to speak out."

"We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance."

The Parrot that Has Ceased to Be: Ukraine will never again be a united country

September 30th, 2014

by Daniel Patrick Welch

For all the speculation swirling around the Minsk Agreement and the Minsk Protocol, it is essential to keep one very salient fact in mind. The western blather about how the Russians are pulling the strings and is simply so much hot air—and not the kind that might help Ukraine through the bitter cold of this winter. Even Putin and his circle are mistaken if they truly think they can put Humpty Dumpty back together again—though I suspect they may already know this and are engaging in some posturing around the issue.

The plain fact is that the idea of a unitary state called Ukraine is completely dead, and there is no Lazarus Protocol waiting in the wings (hence the Monty Python inspired title). Whatever form it takes, however long the process is dragged out, and no matter the pressures that are applied to put the genie back in the bottle, the bell simply cannot be unrung.
