Navi Pillay: US Imperial Tool

April 15th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

On April 14, her latest report looked like earlier ones. She lies for power. She condemned "rampant use of torture in detention in Syria."

She duplicitously blames Assad largely. More on what she said below.

Syria condemned earlier fabricated torture reports. On January 22, its Justice Ministry dismissed a UK Carter-Ruck law firm politicized report. It called it baseless.

It lacked "objectivity and professionalism," it said. Carter-Ruck is linked to Syrian opposition groups. Its report was malicious propaganda. It buried truth.

Israeli State Terrorism

April 15th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It has many forms. Palestinians are longstanding victims. They're isolated on their own. World leaders able to make a difference at best pay them lip service.

They do nothing to alleviate their suffering. They don't stop Israeli lawlessness. They turn a blind eye to its worst crimes. They let Israel get away with murder and much more.

Sham peace talks continue. They mock legitimate ones. Israel threatens world peace and security. War on Palestine continues.

It's ongoing. It's unabated. It rages daily. Collaborationist PA negotiators turn a blind eye. Israeli crimes are ignored.

We're All Ukrainians Now

April 15th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

On February 22, 2014, Ukrainian freedom died. Western-supported fascist putschists seized power. They ousted Ukraine's democratically elected government.

Mob rule replaced it. Illegitimate xenophobic, ultranationalist, neo-Nazi, anti-Semitic thugs run things. They do so with full US backing.

Eastern Ukrainians reject Kiev putschists. They want democracy. They want the real thing. They want what Americans don't have. They're going all-out to get it.

They're a role model for freedom fighters everywhere. They deserve universal support.

They continue rallying across Eastern Ukraine. They seized government buildings. They're peaceful. They're courageous.

The Global Banking Game Is Rigged, and the FDIC Is Suing

April 14th, 2014

by Ellen Brown

Taxpayers are paying billions of dollars for a swindle pulled off by the world’s biggest banks, using a form of derivative called interest-rate swaps; and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has now joined a chorus of litigants suing over it. According to an SEIU report:

Derivatives . . . have turned into a windfall for banks and a nightmare for taxpayers. . . . While banks are still collecting fixed rates of 3 to 6 percent, they are now regularly paying public entities as little as a tenth of one percent on the outstanding bonds, with rates expected to remain low in the future. Over the life of the deals, banks are now projected to collect billions more than they pay state and local governments – an outcome which amounts to a second bailout for banks, this one paid directly out of state and local budgets.

It is not just that local governments, universities and pension funds made a bad bet on these swaps. The game itself was rigged, as explained below. The FDIC is now suing in civil court for damages and punitive damages, a lead that other injured local governments and agencies would be well-advised to follow. But they need to hurry, because time on the statute of limitations is running out.

Ukrainians Denied Democracy

April 14th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Claiming otherwise doesn't wash. Moscow called Kiev events "an illegitimate fascist coup and a military seizure of power." Western-supported putschists seized it.

At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urges deescalating crisis conditions. It's completely possible, he said.

It requires replacing putschists with democratic governance. It involved instituting responsible policies. Ones that protect fundamental legal rights and freedoms of all Ukrainians. Ones that guarantee them.

Russia is on the right side of history. It promised help. It set four conditions. It wants legitimate Crimean independence recognized.

US Anti-Iranian Arrogance

April 14th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Iranian President Hassan Rohani appointed Hamid Aboutalebi as permanent Tehran UN ambassador. It's effective July 25, 2014. More on him below.

Last week, Congress unanimously voted to deny him visa permission to enter America. Effectively he was declared persona non grata.

Legislation passed "den(ies) admission to the United States to any representative to the United Nations who has engaged in espionage activities against the United States, poses a threat to United States national security interests or has engaged in a terrorist activity against the United States."

Neocon Ted Cruz (R. TX) sponsored Senate legislation. He outrageously called Iran a "rogue nation."

Rep. Ed Royce (R. CA) was no better. He maliciously said appointing Aboutalebi "show(s) contempt for the United States."

Palestinian Children's Day 2014

April 14th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

In 1925, the World Conference for the Well-Being of Children first proclaimed a day to honor children. In 1954, it was universally established.

Dozens of countries recognize it. Variants include the UN's November 20 Universal Children's Day.

It was established to encourage all countries to institute a day. It urged doing so to promote mutual exchange and understanding for children's rights.

It was done to promote child welfare worldwide. On November 20, 1958, UN members adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.

Escalating War on Syria

April 14th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

Syria is Obama's war. He didn't launch it to quit. He wants Assad ousted. He's stronger now than when conflict erupted. It began in March 2011. It's in year four.

Abbas enjoys overwhelming support. It's no surprise. Syrians deplore foreign invaders. He's their sole source of protection.

He consistently routs Western-supported death squads. He controls most parts of Syria. He does so effectively. He's committed to defending his people responsibly.

On April 11, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) headlined "Army's intensive campaign against terrorism continues in all Syrian areas."

They're effectively targeted or eliminated in and around Aleppo, Damascus, Qunetira, Homs, Hassaka, Idleb, and elsewhere.

Washington won't accept defeat. It stepped up support for insurgents. It followed Obama's late March Saudi Arabia visit.

What Ukraine Propaganda Looks Like

April 14th, 2014

by Stephen Lendman

It's like US propaganda. Like other Western propaganda. Big Lies repeat. They proliferate. They follow one after another. Truth is systematically buried.

The Ukrainian News Agency (UNA) is Kiev-based. It's part of the UA Inter Media Group Limited. It owns 61% of the Ukrainian TV channel Inter.

On April 13, it headlined "Foreign Ministry: There is Evidence of Russian Special Forces' Involvement in Seizure of Government Facilities in Eastern Ukraine."

Allegations are baseless. No evidence whatever proves them. John Kerry accused Russia of the same thing. Sergei Lavrov confronted him responsibly.

Triumph of the Ill - Ukraine Coup Leaders Turn on People

April 13th, 2014

from Michael Collins

ukrainecandidateUkrainian security forces are entering the city of Slavyansk in the eastern Ukraine according to reports from both RT and the Associated Press. Protesters in that city seized several municipal buildings including police headquarters to protest government policies. The move came after the Ukraine's acting Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk issued a demand that citizens cease the occupation of public buildings across the eastern Ukraine. (Image)

The Ukraine's Alfa counter-terrorism group refused the PMs orders to disperse demonstrators saying: "We will act strictly according to law. Our group has been set up to free hostages and combat terrorism."
